great transcription

As a big fan of Donald Fagen's music, these transcriptions are very accurate. The chord voicings for guitar are excellent and accurately reflect the complex harmonies in the tunes. A real treasure and great workout for musicians (especially guitarists) who are Fagen fans and don't have the requisite level of jazz harmony transcription skills. He's a great songwriter and it's a "wholesome harmonic mindbath" to have all the rich harmony at your fingertips and in your ears. It's all laid out and you play it and rejoice cause it doesn't just sound close, it's on the money! Green Flower Street Cmaj7-F#7-F6-E7 or Goodbye Look Fmaj7-B7#5-Bbmaj13-A7#5-Dm9-G11. His chromatic movement is cool.
Out of print, way too bad. Now will someone lay out Zawinul/Shorter Weather Report harmonies accurately for guitar? I'm just growing old.

Best songbook ever!

I was lucky enough to find this songbook. Of the dozens of songbooks I have, Nightfly is the absolute best. The chords are meticulously transcribed, and finger placement is nearly 4 (or even 5) on every chord! Very complex jazz stuff, but with a lot of practice, you could play these Nightfly tunes on solo guitar and still have them sound like the originals! The chord structures are brilliant, and if you play them like the book shows them, you'll have the melody line included on every song just by playing the proper chords, so you can sing the vocal and not have to worry about playing the melody simultaneously. This book is out of print but I suggest you seek it out if you want to REALLY play the songs well. No homemade arrangements or simple chords are going to do this music justice. This is the real deal and should have won an award for "most accurate and ingenious transcription", as well as packaging (some rare photos and even liner notes from the editor).

Great book - read this before you buy one of the expensive used ones!

I love this music. It was transcribed as the actual music from the album the musicians played, except for a couple of songs which also have the melody doubled in the music.
One thing I don't understand is why this now out-of-print book is priced so high. I realize its no longer available from the publisher but you can download a copy for just $8.99 on Scribd.com. You can choose a monthly access payment, or a one time fee for a single 24 hour access period, to everything they have for $8.99 as well. So I now have nice scans of the entire book saved on my computer for just 9 bucks, as a single PDF file.. (http://www.scribd.com/)
