There may be a corner of the world where the name J.R.R. Tolkien is unknown, but you would be hard-pressed to find it. Since their publication, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have been published in every major language of the world. And though he single-handedly gave a mythology to the English and was beloved by millions, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien remained refreshingly unchanged by his fame and fortune, living out his days simply and modestly among the familiar surroundings of Oxford College. Humphrey Carpenter, who was given unrestricted access to Tolkien's papers, brilliantly puts meat to the bones of the Tolkien legend in J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography, offering a well-rounded portrayal of this quiet, bookish man who always saw himself first and foremost as a philologist, uncovering rather than creating the peoples, languages, and adventures of Middle-Earth.

Carpenter chronicles Tolkien's early life with a special sensitivity; after losing both parents, Tolkien and his brother Hilary were taken from their idyllic life in the English countryside to a poverty-ridden existence in dark and sooty Birmingham. There were bright points, however. A social and cheerful lad, Tolkien enjoyed rugby and was proud of his gift for languages. It was also at this time that he met Edith Bratt, who would later become his wife. Academic life--both as a student and professor--is where this biography shines. Friendship with other men played a huge part in Tolkien's life, and Carpenter deftly reveals the importance these relationships--his complex friendship with C.S. Lewis, membership in the Inklings and the T.C.B.S.--had on the development of his writing.

The only criticism one can make about this book is that Carpenter tends to gloss over Tolkien's contributions to comparative philology. True, there is a chapter devoted to Tolkien's academic pursuits, but it tends to skim too lightly over the surface for this reviewer's tastes. Philology is a terribly methodical science, and the author clearly did not want to alienate readers who were primarily interested in Tolkien as a storyteller. Still, it would be nice to understand why Tolkien was held in such high esteem by his fellow academics. As it stands, Tolkien comes off as a slightly eccentric etymologist.

Fans who want to delve even deeper into Tolkien's life should pick up a copy of Carpenter's The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien. --P.M. Atterberry

Meet the man behind the masterpiece

Considering the fact that Tolkien abhorred the idea of someone writing a biography on him, considering the fact he thought it ridiculous that someone should read a biography on a writer, and considering his sentiment that the best biography on an author is his works of fiction, calling this book the `authorized' account is pretty presumptuous.
Still, Carpenter manages the subject very well, chronicling Tolkien's life from his early years throughout his life, with a special amount of attention given to the period in which he was creating his `hobbit' stories. This is as much a look inside Tolkien's literary mind as a look at his life, and one of the most fascinating aspects of this work is that the reader is able to follow the development of Tolkien's creative genius and see the very elements that inspired him to write his masterpieces "The Hobbit," "The Lord of the Rings," and "The Silmarillion."
For his biography, Carpenter was able to meet personally with Tolkien before his death. He also had full access to all of Tolkien's papers and letters at Oxford. He was able to talk with many of Tolkien's friends and family. Because of this, Carpenter is able to present a very accurate, extremely reliable, and very personal biography. He is very fair with his subject, and treats Tolkien neither as a deity nor an eccentric old man. The man who created Middle Earth was human, and Carpenter captures this brilliantly.
This work on Tolkien is very highly recommended to any fan of his work who wants a peek inside the life of this remarkable man.

Tolkien and C. S. Lewis - a small point

REVIEW OF HUMPHREY CARPENTER, J. R. R. TOLKIEN, A BIOGRAPHY (Geo. Allen & Unwin, 1977)
This is a biography that is hard to fault. Especially for a Tolkien fan, it is a page-turner, and enormously helpful in understanding Tolkien. It is written with great sympathy and empathy. Appendices provide a genealogical chart (how right for Tolkien!), a chronology, a complete list of published writings up to 1998 (at least in the Houghton Mifflin edition of 2000), and a list of Carpenter's sources.
The central issue in the Tolkien story, as in so many literary biographies, is the strange and mysterious manner in which books like _The Lord of the Rings_ can come out of what to all appearances are humdrum lives. Tolkien didn't even like to travel! In Tolkien's case we have also the additional question of how the human imagination can flower in a modern academic setting. Perhaps these are the two central questions to keep in mind while reading Carpenter, who is clearly often at pains to make Tolkien's life interesting enough to support his image. C. S. Lewis, a close friend of Tolkien, may have partially answered these questions when he wrote that "there are no ordinary people."
The issue of the Lewis-Tolkien friendship provides the quibble I have with Carpenter; it concerns the manner in which the devout Catholicism of Tolkien played a role in the eventual cooling of the friendship between the two men. C. S. Lewis, who was led to convert to Christianity in large part by Tolkien himself, decided to remain Protestant after his conversion, and returned to the Church of England. Carpenter notes especially Tolkien's dislike of Lewis's _Pilgrim's Regress_, which appeared in 1933 and was, I believe, his first book after his conversion. But Carpenter gives no sign of having read _Pilgrim's Regress_, and indeed does not include it in his Appendix D, "Sources and Acknowledgements." Thus Carpenter missed something which might go far in accounting for Tolkien's dislike of that work. In _Pilgrim's Regress_, Book 6, Part ii, "Three Pale Men" we find this exchange (Mr. Neo-Angular is the Catholic):
[begin quote] John was too tired and Drudge too respectful to reply: but Vertue said to Mr. Neo-Angular, "You are very kind. You are saving our lives." "I am not kind at all," said Mr. Neo-Angular with some warmth. "I am doing my duty. My ethics are based on dogma, not feeling." "I understand you very well," said Vertue. "May I shake hands with you?" "Can it be," said the other, "that you are one of us? You are a Catholic? A scholastic?" "I know nothing about that," said Vertue, "but I know that the rule is to be obeyed because it is a rule and not because it appeals to my feelings at the moment." "I see you are not one of us," said Angular, "and you are undoubtedly damned. Virtutes paganorum spendida vitia. Now let us eat." [end quote]
Though Mr. Neo-Angular's (and Vertue's) point is valid for any Christian, this caricature of Catholicism would no doubt have been as much of a shock to Tolkien as it was for me, another confirmed admirer of Lewis, when I first saw it. And yet, literary critics who see Mary, the Blessed Virgin, in Tolkien's Galadriel can hardly fail (though I have never seen it mentioned) to see Mary also in Lewis's personification, Reason ("The Giant Slayer"). In Book 3 of _Pilgrim's Regress_ we find Reason portrayed as a woman "wound in a cloak of blue," a woman in the flower of her age, a sun-bright virgin" (Part ix) who in Book 4, Part ii, is portrayed as a mother figure, and in Part iv is referred to as "the Virgin." Lewis apparently even knew that one of Mary's titles is "Seat of Wisdom."
Well, C. S. Lewis's grasp of Catholicism is forever a mystery. But Carpenter's treatment of this issue would, I submit, have been improved by a reading of _Pilgrim's Regress_.
Tolkien fans, or people who would just like an excuse to re-read _The Lord of the Rings_, will like to have some maps handy (recall that Bilbo Baggins loved maps). I can speak highly for Barbara Strachey, _Journeys of Frodo: An Atlas of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings_ (Ballantine Books, NY, 1981; and Karen Wynn Fonstad, _The Atlas of Middle-Earth_ *revised edition* (Houghton Mifflin, 1991). Be sure to get the revised edition of Fonstad.

THE definitive biography of the Master of Middle Earth

This book is the definitive biography of one of the 20th century's most beloved authors, JRR Tolkien. Humphrey Carpenter, Tolkien's official biographer was given unprecendeted access to Tolkien family members and family papers, and this clearly shows. Tolkien's early life, his love of Edith Bratt, his devout faith and his war-time experiences are all chronicled, giving new understanding to his life as not only the premier fantasy-genre author of his day (and of all time, for that matter), but also his academic career as a noted philologist, and his relationship with "The Inklings", especially CS Lewis.
No fan of Tolkien will want to be without this book.
Tolkien fans will also want to read "Letters of JRR Tolkien" also edited by Carpenter, and fans of the Inklings as a literary group will want to read Carpenter's "The Inklings".

This fifth edition was prompted in part by the great increase of computers in industrial controls and automation, which has produced computer programs that can simulate relays and relay contacts. These on/off discrete controls have eliminated the wiring and installation of hardware components in favor of virtual relays and contacts that can be programmed on a keyboard. The devices that perform these operations are called Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), or simply programmable controllers. These devices were initially stand-alone computers that controlled a specific robot or manufacturing operation. However, with the advent of the Internet, they have now been integrated with the overall manufacturing process, leading seamlessly to integration with management, sales, procurement, and consumer satisfaction.

The relay control of machines covered in Chapter 20 is now supplemented by coverage of PLC controls in Chapter 31. Chapter 31 covers the basic principles of PLCs and shows, by way of example, how they are used in running the activities of a large service enterprise. This new chapter illustrates how these trend-setting computer-based activities involving controls and automation are being integrated with other business activities, including e-commerce.

As I mentioned in the last edition, similar upheavals have occurred in power technology. It is simply amazing to witness the entrance of power electronics into every facet of industrial drives. Thus, it is no longer pertinent to discuss do and ac machines in isolation because wherever they are being installed, an electronic control forms part of the package. Consequently, the term drive now involves not the motor alone but the entire unit that directs the torque and speed of the machine. This is having a direct influence on the way electrical machinery courses are being taught.

How has this dramatic change come about? It is mainly due to the high-power solid state switching devices, such as insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), which can operate at frequencies of up to 20 kHz. The change has also been driven by thyristors and gate turn-off thyristors (GTOs) that can handle currents of several thousand amperes at voltages of up to 5 kV Another key element is the computing power of microprocessors that can process signal data in real time with incredible speed.

The high switching frequencies of IGBTs permit the use of pulse-width-modulation techniques in power converters. This, in turn, enables torque and speed control of induction motors down to zero speed. This was not feasible in rectangular-wave converters that were employed only a few years ago.

Most industrial drives are in the fractional horsepower to the 500 hp range. That is precisely the range now available for control by IGBTs. The result has been an explosion in the retrofitting of existing drives. Lower maintenance costs, higher efficiency, and greater productivity have made such changeovers economically attractive. Thus, do drives are being replaced by induction motor drives, which require less maintenance while offering equal and often superior dynamic performance.

Every sector of industrial and commercial activity is therefore being affected by this revolutionary converter technology. Electric elevators, electric locomotives, electric transit vehicles, servomechanisms, heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, fans, compressors, and innumerable industrial production lines are being modified to utilize this new technology.

The change is also affecting the transmission and distribution of electric power—an industry that has been relatively stable for over 50 years. Here, we are seeing large rotating machines, such as synchronous condensers and frequency changers, being replaced by solid-state converters that have no moving parts at all.

Important development work, carried out by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto, California, in collaboration with several electrical manufacturers, has also resulted in the creation of high-power static switches, thyristor-controlled series capacitors, and converters that can fill the role of phase-shift transformers.

These new methods of power flow control, known by the acronym FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) will permit existing transmission and distribution lines to carry more power to meet the ever-increasing demand for electricity. On account of their extremely fast response, the converters can also stabilize a network that may suddenly be menaced by an unexpected disturbance.

It is remarkable that these innovations all rest on a common base. In other words, the converter technology used in electric motor drives is similar to that employed to control the flow of power in electric utilities. As a result, everything falls neatly and coherently into place. The teaching and learning of electric machines, drives, and power systems are thereby made much easier.

The following changes have been made in the fourth and fifth editions:

• Every page of the original work was examined for clarity of expression and reviewed as to its pedagogical quality. As a result, more than 20 percent of the pages were altered.
• The end-of-chapter problems and their solutions were revised and double-checked.
• Chapter 7 on Active, Reactive, and Apparent Power was completely revised to make this important topic easier to understand.
• Most importantly, I have added a new chapter on harmonics. Chapter 30 reveals how harmonics are generated and how they affect the behavior of capacitors, inductors, cables, transformers, and the quality of electric power.

I also devised a simple method that enables students to calculate the harmonic content in a distorted wave. Once they know how to unravel a wave into its harmonic components, their interest in harmonics quickly rises.

All the important changes first introduced in previous editions have been kept in this fifth edition. Thus, the writing of circuit equations, the discussion of higher frequency transformers, and the equivalent circuit diagram of the single-phase induction motor have all been retained.

• A new section covering the writing of circuit equations was added to Chapter 2. Most students know how to solve such equations, but many experience difficulty in formulating them. I disclose an ac/dc circuit-solving methodology that is particularly easy to follow. Readers will be glad to refer to this section as a convenient reminder of the circuit-solving procedure.
• Chapter 11 on Special Transformers was expanded to include higher frequency transformers. The reader is guided through the reasoning behind the design of such transformers, and why they become smaller as the frequency increases. High-frequency transformers are directly related to the higher frequencies encountered in switching converters.
• Chapter 16 on Synchronous Generators has been expanded to show why an increase in size inevitably leads to higher efficiencies and greater outputs per kilogram. This fundamental aspect of machine design will interest many readers.
• A new section was added to Chapter 18 to develop the equivalent circuit diagram of a single-phase induction motor. It presents a rigorous, yet simple approach, based on the 3-phase induction motor. Hand-held computers can be programmed to solve the circuit, which permits a better understanding of this ubiquitous single-phase machine.
• Chapter 21, Fundamental Elements of Power Electronics, was revised and expanded to include switching converters and pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques. It illustrates the extraordinary versatility of IGBT converters and how they can be made to generate almost any waveshape and frequency.

Good for motors and some power systems stuff.

I like the way this book is written. Reads easier than other texts. Generally easy to digest with pretty good examples.

Wish it covered more power system stuff than it does because I like the author's style. But best form motors and generators.

Power System Analysis by Grainger and Stevenson is better for some things than this, but this is better for motors etc..

Great study guide on motors for the Electrical Power PE

I purchased based on a tread I read online for use with the Electrical Power PE exam. I am extremely pleased. There are parts of motors and generators I havent' been able to get for years because no one really gave a good explaination. THIS IS GREAT! I knew more 2 hours in then I ever did. Not a condensed version of information, but also doesn't droan on- great information.

I got this book when studying for the Power PE the second time. This book is excellent. It has technical and practical information about motors, generators, transformers, etc. It was one of the 5 books I ended up using during my second go at the Power PE. You will find answers to unexpected PE questions in this book.

Not a justification of pessimism, just the opposite

For those who walk around with a scowl on their face all day and hope to find in this book the secret to being happy while being angry, depressed or forlorn, this books will probably not the mark, because there is no mark to hit.

But if you're just one of those many people out there like myself who's trying to avoid being angry and upset, but who doesn't buy the "be happy and wonderful things will happen to you" mantra, this book will be interesting. I say "interesting" not "enlightening" because it is a surface treatment covering everything from ancient stoicism to Buddhism to modern-day Santa Muerte beliefs and as such can't possibly be deep enough to be enlightening. It does go deep enough to show the common theme running through many beliefs, that happiness is ultimately related to finding a way to be content and productive in the world as it is, without devoting too much of our energy to struggling against it. The book does not suggest that we not try to better ourselves or the world around us, but does make the point that it is the struggle against our condition that is likely to make us unhappy far more than the condition we're in to begin with.

I found this book to be an interesting departure point, suggesting several others that I suspect will be more enlightening, rather than merely interesting.

The path to serenity via acceptance of uncertainty... and more

An excellent book, particularly for people experiencing "existential angst" (my definition being that they feel depressed and anxious about their lives, the state of the world in general, and their place in it). The author basically examines the belief in positive thinking and the mental denial of failure, and points out the extent to which such beliefs frequently lead do NOT lead to happiness, but to feelings of disappointment and self-blame. He then embarks on an easily read examination of a series of philosophies, philosophers, and research sources to discover how one can more effectively find tranquility by embracing uncertainty and acceptance of what may be - whatever it may be.

The extraordinarily well-read author's path leads us from Seneca and the Stoics, past some disadvantages of goal-setting to Ulrich Tolle and the benefits of insecurity. He pays a rather entertaining visit to a museum dedicated to products that failed in the marketplace, the "survivor bias," and a discussion about the widespread avoidance of thoughts about death. Each of these is a starting point for his very cogent thoughts and research about a specific aspect of the journey on which he is taking the reader.

I must admit to having been somewhat of a convert to the author's philosophy before picking up the book, so that there is some bias here, but I truly believe that most Westerners would benefit greatly from reading this book slowly and thoughtfully. True, there was a point in mid-read when either my mind wandered, or the author did not clearly explain the connection between the current topic and his main line of thought. However, he (or I) returned well before the end and left me extremely glad to have read it.

In his Epilogue, Burkeman uses two expressions with which I was not familiar but which were particularly interesting to me: First, "negative capability," reportedly coined by the poet John Keats who explained it as "when [one] is capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason..." Second is a word that may have the same meaning, acceptance of "opensure," which is the opposite of closure. As a counselor and coach I have often thought that if people could end their search for certainty and/or closure they would be much happier, and I am pleased to find a word that describes that state.

The very thoroughly researched text ends with an extensive bibliography, so that the curious can go to sources quite easily.

I recommend Oliver Burkeman's "The Antidote" to just about anyone whose search for certainty, or belief in positive thinking as the path to happiness, have not actually led them to the tranquility that they seek. That would probably be most people.

I am a sucker. Feature a writer on National Public Radio, and the interview is mildly entertaining, I will buy the book. I will also probably read it -- the only question remaining: will I actually like it?

The Antidote, for sure, is personally fascinating. I abhor positive thinking, gravitating instead toward reality. But I didn't come by this easily. In my early 20's, I became obsessed with all manner of self help, positive thinking and new age spirituality. I devoured (embarrassing) self help books, feeling temporarily inspired by them while making feeble attempts to put the words into practice. Inevitably, I'd feel like a failure for not being able to be perfect -- or even slightly "better" than I was before; I'd feel consumed with anger and resentment, too, that my problems didn't magically go away; that life wasn't easier. It took me a LONG TIME to realize that my faux spirituality was primarily the cause of my dissatisfaction and pain.

My actual problems were far less annoying than the books I was reading to solve them.

I wish I'd read The Antidote 15 years ago.

The Antidote travels familiar -- to me, a junkie, at least -- terrain. If you've ever read a book on buddhism (through a pop culture lens), for instance, much of this won't be new: accept life as it is. But the context will; the author blends storytelling, cutting edge research, personal anecdote and wry humor into this compelling case for what he refers to as the negative path; the wisdom of the Stoics as a sane approach to life.

I am torn as to how many stars to offer; for whatever reason, I wasn't in love with the book as a whole. The author is certainly a talented writer, but I felt like the book went on and on. And on. This kind of thing, yes, is highly subjective, so take it with a grain of salt. To me, this book would have been a lot better had it been a lot shorter. I often feel this way about non-fiction books -- that there's a quota to fill. What's wrong with lean and mean?

(OK, OK: the book is not actually that long, so maybe it's my attention span).

It also bears mentioning that reading The Antidote is not actually the antidote for, really, anything: you actually have to live -- which means accepting that life is hard and messy and sometimes ugly and awful; it means not constantly trying to escape it.

But if you're obsessed with The Secret, then you need this book. The Secret will not-so-secretly let you down, again and again. The Antidote contains actual valuable advice: there are no shortcuts, magical thinking is useless and, my favorite: a little negativity will make us happier.

Construction professionals have long been valued for their technical expertise. Employers and clients expect that electricians will know electricity, plumbers will know piping, masons will know brick, and carpenters will know wood.

To this end, most construction training programs have long focused on teaching the technical aspects of the job. After elementary courses in mathematics and an overview of tools and safety regulations, workers-in-training follow a very specific path designed to make them expert in the tools, techniques, and terms of their chosen trade.

But the construction industry has begun to change to meet the demands of the twenty-first century, and instructors and trainers have now identified another set of skills in which construction professionals must be trained: communication skills. Applied Communication Skills for the Construction Trades is the first text to offer comprehensive instruction to construction trainees (and even experienced workers) in the four key areas of on-the-job communication:

• Speaking
• Reading
• Writing

Unlike other communication texts, which are often written for the general public or for people who will work in an office atmosphere, this book has been prepared specifically to meet the needs of the construction industry. All the examples in the text are drawn from. construction-related documents (such as OSHA regulations, training manuals, materials lists, job specs, and blueprints) and construction-related settings and situations. To ensure that the book meets the needs of today's construction industry, it has been extensively reviewed by construction personnel.

CONTENTS AND ORGANIZATION

Applied Communication Skills for the Construction Trades is designed for maximum flexibility. For this reason, the text is composed of "modules" rather than "chapters." Trainers and instructors can teach topics in any order they choose. They need not start at Module 1 and continue in a linear fashion through Module 8. In short, the text's flexibility allows instructors to customize the text to meet the needs of their students, which may vary from class to class or from program to program.

Each of the four communication skills is taught in two back-to-back modules. The first module provides the basics of that skill. The second module treats advanced topics in that skill. The advanced modules are particularly well suited to training programs for experienced workers, who may have already mastered the basics. The focus throughout the text is on improving skills that students already have to a certain extent. Thus, while the text offers tips on how to read more effectively and improve comprehension and retention, it is not intended as a basic literacy text.

FEATURES

Applied Communication Skills for the Construction Trades is designed as an interactive text. Students are encouraged to work directly in the text, to think about what they've learned, to practice their new skills, and to collaborate with team members or classmates.

Each module offers the following features:

SKILLS INSTRUCTION. Each module offers five to eight "mini-modules," numbered for easy reference. For example, instruction on "Reading Visual Materials" appears in Section 6.1, which is the first section in Module 6. Instruction on the role of listening in on-the-job safety is found in Section 1.4, which is the fourth section in Module 1. Because each section is designed to stand on its own, instructors can choose to skip individual sections without worrying about issues of transition or "flow" Cross-references to other parts of the book are clearly noted when necessary.

Instructors and trainers can get very creative with the tips and suggestions included with the skills instruction. You might want to offer additional suggestions of your own or ask students to provide examples from their own experience.

ACTIVITIES. Applied Communication Skills for the Construction Trades includes more than 100 activities. Designed to provide practice in the skills being learned, these activities come in a variety of formats: self-assessment exercises, action plans, questionnaires, and quizzes in multiple formats (multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, true/false, short answer). Several exercises (indicated with an asterisk in the table of contents) are specifically designated collaborative exercises because they require more than one person to complete.

The activities can be used in many ways. They may be assigned as homework, completed in class, or used as quizzes. Even those activities not specifically designated as "collaborative" can become so with only minor adjustments.

Answers to all activities are provided at the end of the text.

In addition, the text offers several additional resources that may be valuable to trainees:

• Appendix A, "Working with Technology," provides tips on integrating technology into every facet of one's construction career, offering tips on working with computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and fax machines.
• Appendix B, "Managing Your Construction Career," is an all-in-one career starter kit. It takes the novice through the basics of preparing a resume, writing a cover letter, and sitting for an interview.
• Appendix C contains a glossary of construction terms.
