Not funny on the page

This play is advertised as a comedy. If that means you're tickled by a premise or witty lines and actions which bring a smile to your face and a laugh or more, then this fails. I could not find anything humorous in it. But then, I'm not witnessing a production deftly directed and performed by actors. I'm just reading the script. It may prove to be hilarious on stage. I'll wait and see.

Expected more

Revision; I have upgraded my rating of this book to four stars. The author's response to my comment answered much of my criticism. Basic to my concerns was that the title and sub-title, not the author's choice, is misleading. The author's suggested title, "Getting started in kinetic art" is much more suitable. I still feel, however, that one or two examples of complex, "putting it all together" would have been useful.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I wanted to like it because I liked the author's prior book and I expected this to be a continuation. The cover art suggested more complex movements than the book describes. Books by Rodney Peppe and the author's prior work are more useful than this book. The examples tend to be of the rather simple, single movement kind. For example, put a ball on a stick, put a pivot point in the middle of the stick, push the lower end of the stick back and forth and watch the ball move back and forth. The book does cover simple movements well. Another example, you can make a cardboard profile of a face, make the jaw with a pivot point and a long lever, then move the lever up and down to open/close the mouth.
Possibly, the book was intended for a very young audience, or the author wished to get something out without giving away his "secrets." There is anecdotal wisdom here instead of descriptions about combining various mechanical movements, and no descriptions of what the more complex objects actually do. The author talks about a piece with a clockwork motor which runs for a minute or so, but doesn't say what it is doing during that minute. Perhaps nothing?
I think I have a different definition of what kinetic art is than the author. I would suggest a visit the Cabaret Mechanical Theater website and accessing some of the links for examples of kinetic/mechanical works, many in wood.

A disapointment

The cover is misleading. It shows an interesting artwork but the text is trivial in ideas. The approach is to consider a mechanical linkage, cam, crank etc., and then give detailed instructions on making boring and trivial example. The frustrating aspect is that photographs of interesting but complex pieces are scattered through the book. I expect that he author felt that explaining the basic mechanisms was the major point. What is omitted is combining multiple mechanisms and creating something other than a simple toy for a six year old. The result is an unbridged gap between the art that is occasionally illustrated and the bulk of the text. The first 71 pages could have been covered in fewer than seven pages with no loss. The first interesting photographs are on pages 72 and 73. This construct looks as if it utilizes at least half dozen mechanisms. I am sure that there are a number of interesting problems in the design and construction of this item. What would have been interesting would be details of the working parts with some discussion of the choices and problems. The object is not to suggest that the reader would duplicate this artwork but to give the reader some idea of the decisions, issues and problems in a real complex construction. As an example, This construct uses three pulleys at the base. Pulleys are finally discussed on pages 112-115. Is the third pulley a driven pulley, an idler, called a rider by the author, or both? The photograph raises dozens of interesting questions but the answers are not in this book. What you will find is that the great majority of the book is construction details on projects that almost no one would want to build and very little help on real projects.

Entertaining and Inspirational!

I really enjoyed this book! It is very well written and captured my imagination from beginning to end! Many of the challenges that the main character (Morlen) overcomes can be applied to those challenges that we all face today. His eventual triumphs and development into a heroic figure are a testament to the virtues patience, resilience and faith despite all odds!

I highly recommend this entertaining and inspiring book!

A superb fantasy tale!

I first have to give kudos to Murray for his superb world-building skills. It is no easy feat for a reader to jump from one world into another. (The book that I read before this one was Hill's 'The Fireman', and I was completely immersed within that story...) However, Murray immediately sucked me into the world that he has created, and I never once looked back!

With names such as Morlen, Felkoth, Nottleforf, and Roftome, and items such as the Goldshard, the Crystal Spear, and the Dark Blade, and enemies known as Shriekers and Ferotaurs, you are immediately thrust into this superb fantasy tale!

Beginning with a fragile alliance between the city of Korindelf and Veldere, where the Eaglemasters reside, and with war brewing along their borders, you have no choice but to hold on for the ride!

If you are a fan of fantasy, then this one is a must-read! If you are a fan of Robin Hobb, then I suggest that you give Murray a shot, as there were some similarities, before Murray completely made it all his own. And for fans of Terry Goodkind, Murray explains the title of the book, brilliantly, just like one of Goodkind's "Wizard's Rules".

Murray dropped several hints, within this story, where he will take us in future books, and I for one am looking forward to the next book!

As young adult, Trollope endured seven years of poverty in the General Post Office in London before accepting a better-paying position as postal surveyor in Banagher, Ireland in 1841. The years in Ireland formed the basis of his second career delineating clerical life in small cathedral towns.

Trollope and Social Politics

Trollope's first novel in his Barsetshire series was The Warden. It was based on the corruption at St. Cross Hospital during the early nineteenth century by its Master, Francis North, in Winchester, England.

At the time of the Second Reform Act of 1867, Trollope had written the first of his Paliser series, which was a political novel. At this time, he also wrote Nina Balatka, a novel which reflects the beginning of the end of social restrictions inflicted on Jews in Prague. It concerns the love between a Catholic woman, Nina, and a Jewish man, Anton Trendellsohn who was a merchant.

It is the story of the couple's triumph over family manipulation and lies to find a life for themselves. With so many stereotypical Jewish characters in Trollope's prolific literature, Nina Balatka serves as an effective way to demonstrate that his antisemitism is satirical and stops with his characters while his sympathy for the Jew is without reservation.

Trollope was able to proceed with his political life by running for parliament representing the borough of Beverley. He was unsuccessful but was able to continue his series of Paliser novels. Part of his goal was to chronicle anti-semitism in Victorian England which he did successfully. Due to his evenhandedness in writing Nina Balatka, the prejudice was never one of which he could be accused.

George Eliot followed his lead by writing Daniel Deronda,a story about a Jew who is also betrayed by his family but eventually finds love among one of his own. Although she is generally considered of higher intellect than Trollope, she was not able to rid her novel of her personal conviction that married women are dull, dependent creatures who are unable to think for themselves. In this respect, Nina Balatka is refreshing as a fearless heroine, willing to face the duplicity of her family in the name of love.

Love against all odds in Prague.

Anthony Trollope typically writes long novels with several story lines that come together as the novel progresses. Not so with Nina Balatka. Set in Prague in the middle of the nineteenth century when anti-Semitism made life difficult for the Jews, the story begins with the announcement that a lovely yet desperately poor Christian girl named Nina Balatka is engaged to marry a rich Jewish man named Anton Trendellsohn. Everyone in the Christian and Jewish community is against the marriage and Nina's aunt and cousin do all they can to prevent the wedding from taking place.

Nina, a strong willed and completely reliable young woman, is well prepared to defend herself against all of Prague, if necessary. Her chief problem is not the Christians and Jews in Prague, but her betrothed, Anton Trendellsohn. His father owns the house Nina and her father live in, but the Trendellsohns do not have the deed for the property. Anton desperately wants to acquire this document. Nina tells Anton in no uncertain terms that she and her father don't have the deed, but he does not believe her.

The entire novel centers on this lack of trust and its consequences for Nina and Anton. We, the readers, know that Nina is telling the truth. We experience her frustration as again and again she tries to convince Anton that the deed is in the possession of her aunt, uncle, and cousin, who will do anything to prevent her marriage to Anton.

No spoilers here. The reader of this review who wants to find out just what happens to the deed, the great mystery of the story, will have to read the novel to find out. Also, we don't learn until the end of the book if the course of Nina's true love for Anton is rewarded or if Nina throws herself off a bridge in Prague into the Moldau river to drown herself, as she is tempted to do when it appears that she will not marry Anton.

The problem with this novel is that Nina is too good and Anton is clearly unworthy of her great love. All her reason tells her to break off the marriage and we, the readers, are convinced by her logic, even if she is not. When I finally came to the end of this short novel, and none too soon, I was not fully satisfied with the outcome. Even so, this is the work of Anthony Trollope, one of my favorite English authors. Even mediocre Trollope is far superior to anything the reader is likely to find in any modern novel. Nina Balatka is not a place to begin an acquaintance with the novels of Anthony Trollope, but those who love Trollope's work, as I do, are almost certain to find some merit in this novel.

Having wanted the Japanese version of Newtype's 100% Cowboy Bebop for some time now, I was pleasantly surprised to see a smaller guide in English at my local bookstore. It didn't jump out at me, that's for sure. Measuring in at about a slim 7 x 5.5 inches, the book fits basically anywhere you want it to, including coffee tables or small bookshelves and the likes. But don't let the size fool you, it's packed with basically anything anyone would want to know about the first five episodes of the series, from basic information about the characters to tidbits about seemingly minor incidents and the lyrics of the songs in English and Romanji (phonetic Japanese). There's a small section after the overview of the episodes that goes over the lives of Spike, Jet, and the rest of the gang. Ein and Spike are personally my favorite characters in the whole series, and even Ein gets his own character bio. The print quality is average to above average and the guide is littered with pictures and captions for Sessions 1-5 of the anime. The 14 pages of character designs in black and white in the back of the book are a nice complement to the colorful layouts on the rest of the pages. They seriously show nearly every, if not every, character shown in Cowboy Bebop episodes 1-5. I have a few Gundam data books in Japanese, so it's nice to finally have an anime guide in English that I can read as well as look at the pictures. While the quality might not hold up to other Newtype publications such as the big honkin' Newtype 100% Neon Genesis Evagelion guide (in Japanese), I found the Cowboy Bebop Anime Guide 1 to be something no serious fan should be without. This should definately pique the interest of anyone who still hasn't seen the series as well as fit nicely into any fan's anime or manga library.

Great source for information...

The 'cowboy Bebeop Anime Guide 1' -the first out of six volumes- starts off with a few character bios, then gives summaries and information on the first six episodes of the series. The last few chapters deal with the setting of Cowboy Bebop universe, with a chapter explaining about bounty hunters along with files on the items used by the characters and lots of sketches on everything from the types of spacesuits used to the character of Vicious.
The information is interesting, but most of it can be found if you have the DVDs. This book would make a good gift for Cowboy Bebop fans who have everything else or for people who need the information at their fingertips, like fan fiction writers. Lots of color pictures right from the anime help fill out the work but it still feels kind of weak.

Not impressed, if this was half the price, then its worth it

I'm a huge Cowboy Bebop fan, I own the series on DVD and preordered the movie a long time ago. I bought this book thinking that it would be full of cool facts and info that you wouldn't pick up from the actual DVD, but it's really just a synopsis of each episodes with a bunch of pictures from each episode. There are a few pages of extras, but they are mostly some rough sketches and short bios, nothing really worth the price of this book.
If this was half the price, it might be worth it, but even then I would only suggest this for the absolute collector that must have every Cowboy Bebop related piece of merchandise out there, regardless of quality. For the casual fan, or even the more fanatic, it's simply not worth the money.

About the Author

Jean McNiff is Professor of Educational Research at York St John University, UK. She is also a Visiting Professor at UiT the Arctic University of Norway, and at the Beijing Normal University and Ningxia Teachers’ University, People’s Republic of China.

Jean took early retirement from her position as deputy head teacher of a large secondary school in Dorset, UK. She went into business for herself, and developed her writing. Her textbooks on action research and professional education are now used internationally on workplace-based professional education courses and on higher degree courses. Jean provides interdisciplinary consultancy work to institutions around the world where she gives lectures and conducts workshops on planning, doing and writing action research.

Jean aims to contribute to personal and social betterment through educational research. She encourages everyone to make their stories public in the form of their personal and collaborative theories of practice; and she firmly believes that each individual is able to contribute to social and planetary wellbeing by explaining how they hold themselves accountable for what they do. In this way she links education with moral accountability. She tries to bring the university to everyday contexts, and everyday contexts into the university, for it is only by involving everyone, she feels, that the world will become a better place for us all.

Beware of Kindle edition!

Be aware that the Kindle edition is not the latest edition. And the Kindle edition does not include page numbers for reference. Therefore, I would highly discourage purchasing the Kindle edition as a textbook - which I'm learning the hard way.
Besides that, I find the information in the book valuable, but it takes me a lot of wading through quite repetitive wording between the more useful information. I think this book could be half as long and still contain the same amount of information useful to undertaking an action research project.

Excellent Action Research Text

As a graduate student, I have read several texts in an effort to learn about action research methodology. By far, this book is the best one I have read. It's detailed explanation of the action research process and use of illustrative case studies makes for an easy-to-understand guidebook for any practitioner interested in developing his or her own action research project.

Brilliant

This is far my favourite book on action research. It is written in a simple straight-forward manner, it focuses on how the researcher is part of a political agenda, and it explains how to structure an action research paper or thesis in a similar way to how one would structure another piece of empirical research. Having said this, it is not at easy text to understand on a deep level. The key chapter that defines the nature of the whole book is chapter 8 on the politics of knowledge. Without understanding or agreeing with the ideology expressed here, I think the whole book will fall apart like a house of cards. Nevertheless, the idea of the politics of knowledge aligns with Frankfurt critical theory and the discourse about oppression and freedom is probably so central to anybody considering doing action research, so it may not be a problem. What is more challenging, perhaps, is the way McNiff and Whitehead talk about practitioner theory and practition thinking as more or less the same thing. But this is a completely different issue having to do with the philosophy of science. Personally, I would feel more comfortable if the authors had aligned themselves with somebody like Bas van Fraassen to make the philosophy of science in use both practical and scientific, but this is a problem with most texts about action research I have seen, and the philosophy in this book is probably closer to conventional science than in most books, so this is my favourite.
