About the Author
Kevin Tumlinson was born in Wild Peach, Texas, during the early 70s. Which means he had practically nothing to do for the first 18 years of his life.
That meant he was free from outside stimulus, which gave him a creative edge. He spent his days roaming the back woods and open pastures and abandoned junk piles of Wild Peach, getting into a lot of trouble and building a rich inner world that comes in real handy today.
Kevin is the author of dozens of novels and novellas, including his popular Citadel science fiction trilogy and his ongoing Sawyer Jackson contemporary fantasy series.
Kevin was the winner of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy award, as well as a two-time winner of the Danny Lee Lawrence Award for Fiction.
In addition to writing and publishing, Kevin is the host of the Wordslinger Podcast (wordslingerpodcast.com)--a weekly interview-format show in which Kevin talks to some of the most interesting and upwardly mobile entrepreneurs around. Kevin makes a regular habit of coaching and helping other authors, entrepreneurs and would-be authors improve their craft, build or grow their business, and generally just make their lives better through writing.

Excellent!!!!! Top notch writing!

I found the first book of this trilogy on manybooks.net. Amazing book, very well written. As soon as I finished it, I bought Vol 2, another great book, so I finished the series with Vol 3. I very highly recommend these books to any sci-fi fan! I'll be looking up the author's other works ASAP!
Very enjoyable, totally engrossing work.

The Plot Thickens and Offers Hope

I purchased both First Colony and Paths in Darkness, and read them back-to-back. Paths of Darkness provided sufficient back story to provide context but didn't rehash the first book...which I can totally appreciate. Since I read them back-to-back in one sitting, it's a little more difficult to offer a review of Paths of Darkness independent of First Colony. Tumlinson is craftily revealing sub-plots and introducing a few more characters but he's doing it in such a seemingly effortless and controlled way without trying to do so much that you're left scratching your head about how he's going to wrap all this up in a third and final book. Thoroughly enjoyed 'em both and am really looking forward to book 3.

I rarely find the second book of a series even more enjoyable than the first, but this one is an exception. Great characters and a fast- paced story has me looking forward to the next one.

About the Author
Dan Petersen is a consultant in safety management and organizational behavior. He was responsible for creating the Graduate Program in Safety Management at the University of Arizona. He has held Director-level positions with Allstate, Nationwide and Industrial Indemnity, and Wausau Insurance where he was an Assistant Vice President. He was also on the faculty of Colorado State University and Arizona State University.

Finally a human approach

This is one of the easiest reading text books I have ever come across in my career. I never read more than two or three chapters at once but not once was there a feeling of boredom.

This is an excellent addition to the library of any professional in the safety field and a must have for any prospective CSP candidate.

Safety Management: A Human Approach

Techniques of Safety Management: A Systems Approach, Fourth Edition
Dan Petersen has made enormous contributions to occupational safety and health and this fourth edition of Techniques of Safety Management continues the tradition. This book is a companion volume to Techniques of Safety Management: A Human Approach. A systems approach emphasizes systems but also includes information about the human element.
Petersen discusses numerous changes occurring in the rapidly evolving safety field. For readers who have an earlier edition of this book, the best thing about the fourth edition is the updated material - both revised and new. Petersen does a nice job updating relevant information and including pertinent new topics such as statistical safety control, ISO standards, fault trees for specific safety system elements, and Six Sigma.
The book is well organized into six parts. The first part provides a thorough historical framework of safety including recent changes affecting safety professionals. Petersen has a unique ability to see the big picture and yet skillfully dissect and clearly explain specific techniques successful safety professionals need. He reviews ten safety management principles, then covers the related roles, drivers, and measurement involved in managing safety in Part two.
Part three and four cover proactive and reactive system elements. These are important concepts for safety professionals and safety students to comprehend, because (in the reviewers' opinion) proactive approaches and effective reactive approaches are not commonly performed very well in safety management. Proactive safety approaches are unfortunately missing in many organizations. Proactive topics include changing behavior, changing physical conditions, using ergonomics, and changing the management system. The section on proactive system elements covers about 100 pages and includes valuable information on topics such as motivation, measurement, and risk analysis.
Additional system elements such as complying with OSHA, fleet safety, product safety, and other safety-related programs are reviewed in part five. The Appendix includes over 20 fault trees for safety system elements. Examples of system safety elements include supervisory performance, effective discipline, effective training, support for safety, and management credibility. These are unique to my knowledge and potentially very useful to the safety professional. The book is worth purchasing for these "fault trees" alone.
Petersen emphasizes research as an underlying criterion for sound decisions. He includes a wide variety of studies and authors, and draws upon extensive real world innovations and best practices. The book is replete with useful checklists, templates, and meaningful exhibits. Many of the checklists and formulas are ready for the reader to customize for their own use. One example provided and explained in detail is the Justification Formula. The Justification Formula is used to assess risks, and "provides both Safety and Management with guidance in deciding whether the cost of a proposed safety project is justified...and gives a solid foundation upon which Safety may base its recommendations for corrective action" (p.179). The Justification Formula appears to be a genuinely valuable tool for safety professionals.
The book has the broad aim to be of value to students, safety professionals, industry specialists, part-time safety specialists in industry, line managers, private consultants, and insurance safety engineers. Each of these groups should find Petersen's book a helpful guide containing numerous tools and techniques they can effectively use.

Anyone who calls themselves a powerlifter should have this book. As much as I would prefer a PDF/paperback version, the formatting holds up well for Kindle with the pictures and everything displayed neatly. Really really glad that it has been brought back in SOME format, and I hope that this version is successful enough to justify a real re-run!

COAN: The Monster

As a former powerlifter who competed in the 220 lb. class, I view Ed Coan as the Michael Jordon, Muhammed Ali or Dick Butkus of the sport … his accomplishments were (are) simply astonishing. Considering that powerlifting doesn’t get the glory of being an Olympic sport (like Olympic lifting) or the media attention of bodybuilding, a book about one of its more iconic athletes was hard for me to ignore. With COAN: THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE METHOD, Marty Gallagher provides an interesting look at Ed Coan’s life, his achievements and his training. While the book comes across overly indulgent at times and its subject is unknown to most, I consider it a worthy read for any powerlifter.

COAN is rather straightforward. Gallagher provides a biography of Ed Coan, a detailed account of his competitions and his training regimen. I found the biographical segment somewhat humorous as Coan’s entire life is centered solely on powerlifting: his “bachelor’s pad” is in his parent’s basement and there is nothing describing any type of gainful employment. Gallagher tries hard to add some flair to Coan’s rather “subdued” lifestyle, but it falls flat. To put it plainly, other than his freakish feats of strength, there isn’t really a lot of interesting stuff to reveal about the subject and the biographical stuff is simply filler. I found the book’s value i centering on the lifting itself. I enjoyed reading the recaps of Coan’s meet progression over the years (most all of them National and International championships). As someone who used to be completely absorbed into the sport, I remember seeing Coan’s phenomenal lifting records listed in issues of Powerlifting USA magazine. Seeing these incredible totals posted by a 220 lb. man that were higher than the best totals of men weighing over 100 lbs. more served as motivation for my own training. I always wondered how he progressed to such levels and this book explains every lift of every meet in full detail with added personal commentary from Coan himself. We get to see complete meet totals with individual lifts (attempts, pass and fails) that provide a clearer picture of Coan’s progression to the top of the lifting food chain. The one issue that somewhat clouds Coan’s feats is obviously the failed drug tests (and ultimate lifetime ban from the IPF) which were blamed on anything but the likely source and Gallagher treads gingerly around the issue. Regardless, a 220 lb. man squatting 961 lbs., benching 584 lbs., and deadlifting 901 lbs. is certainly impressive under any circumstance. The back end of the book is dedicated to Coan’s training philosophy, which seem to be both methodical and surprisingly casual. Gallagher peppers the book with photographs that add visual clarity to Coan’s gift of strength (mainly his squat depth).

The book is tailored for powerlifters or those who appreciate strength sports … a small, but rabidly loyal segment of the sports world. In other words, those who aren’t familiar with the sport probably will have zero interest in Ed Coan’s accomplishments (let alone his personal life). But those of us who love the sport will certainly appreciate the recap of Coan’s lifting prowess (70+ world records and a competition history of 15 1st place finishes and a single 3rd place finish in national/international championship meets). If you a fan of powerlifting, this is certainly a book you can appreciate.

Subjects include herbs, crystals, animal totems, deities, moon phases, tarot, misc., and the guides for how to. Absolutely loved this book and would highly recommend it for your library.

A long time in coming...

Anyone who has had to put up with cobbling pages and lists of correspondences together off the internet and by hand and printed from the computer knows what a big help this book is. Is it complete? No... but that's pretty much impossible... but I'm sure with future editions and revisions it will get closer! A great place to start and a great reference to have on hand.

A positive future prophecy - at last!

There's a slight feeling of Neale Donald Walsch here -- an ordinary man has found himself, pen and paper in hand, channelling(?) a book full of profound spiritual information about (thank goodness) a better world. Robert Lee Potter has compiled these "Letters", dictated to him by a woman named O who lives on earth 500 years in the future, into a remarkable read which is the next step up for those who are looking for something new and challenging beyond current wishy-washy New Age titles.

O provides a profound explanation about what the world is currently experiencing, and a fascinating snapshot as to what Earth will look like in a few hundred years. Here's a teaser: there are thousands of 'nations', no money, a radically reduced population living in environmental harmony, advanced technology which includes teleporting, and no organised religions. People no longer have names, and take multiple lovers. How/why? It's all because of the Death of the Ego.

According to O (a future reincarnation of Potter?), humanity is currently experiencing a Great Storm... although not a physical one. Rather, it refers to the intense emotional and spiritual processing we're currently grappling with inside ourselves. Everyone on earth is experiencing the Great Storm, but the more spiritually enlightened souls amongst us will better understand the big changes as they unfold... enabling them to literally 'fly through the eye of the storm'.

In a huge and colossal rippling effect around the globe, human bodies will evolve to a level of spirituality / consciousness which occurs at a cellular DNA level, moving us from being homo sapiens to homo evigilatus. The ego that has been present in humanity since the dawn of time will be completely eradicated, resulting in an ego-less race. Ego has been responsible for many great advances in our intellect, creativity, and soul lessons thus far, but ultimately, it garners fear, overpopulation and destruction... hence its natural, inevitable end. The 'meek' shall literally inherit the earth.

The energy literally jumps off this book -- people are magnetised to it for a variety of reasons. For fans who can't get enough, and have plenty of burning questions once they've finished reading, the author is already working on Book Two.

An Incredible Journey ... Full of Promise for a Beautiful Future

There are very few books that have touched me in the way Letters from 500 has. It is so much more than a book; it's a beautiful journey into the future 500 years from now, a touching exploration that shows in no uncertain terms there is much reason to hope for a cleaner planet, more loving society and peace within.

Robert Lee Potter is the first to admit he was skeptical when he began to communicate with O, who reached out to him in the hope to bring some peace and calm to society as it is in 2010, as we face great upheavals, personally, and at the hands of Mother Nature, who is expressing herself through earthquakes, cyclones, floods, fires and more. However, as you travel the road with Robert as he communicates regularly with O -- and is often transported into the world of the Vigilans (the new race) -- it is clear this is no work of fiction.

The future 500 years from now is an ego-less one, free of much of the burdens that an ego-filled nature presents -- the very human nature that has created separation from ourselves, each other and the planet. In the Year 500 communication is intuitive, love is expressed fully. It is a future of great promise and hope. It is a future of oneness.

Letters from 500 is an absolute joy. It has profoundly affected the way I live my life and my understanding of what (and why) it is we, as a human race, are going through today. To know that the turmoil we face will transform into such beauty tomorrow is heartening, uplifting and at times, blissfully emotional.

Letters from 500 is a blessing and a must-have addition to any library. If you are like me, you will want to re-read and refer to it often.

Perhaps some people would require more than I to find the situation of present and future time being interconnected. I find this new view of who we are now and what we are doing, set in context of a possible future, very interesting and thought-provoking.

This book is an erotic fairy tale that will leave you wanting more.

I identified with Serena’s feelings and would have done the same things she did in the story. To have to ask a frog for help is not something I could see myself doing. However, he told her that if he helped her he would ask for one thing in return…just one thing. Most people would say yes. All he asks is for her to take him wherever she goes. Yuck! I would cringe if I knew I had to even touch a frog. I would faint on the ground and afterwards get up and come up with a new dance. Just thinking about it makes me shiver.

But all is not as it seems. Prince Rennick was turned into a frog by a witch after going out with her daughter and leaving her for another girl when he grew bored. He’s a prince so he thinks he should be able to do what he wants and loves to add BDSM into his sex life.

The author has woven such an erotic fairy tale. It has a curse to break, but with a twist. If the curse isn’t broken, Rennick will die and Serena will have to live with just having her passions that are newly awakened die after just a taste.

As I read this adult fairy tale, I felt myself experiencing the joy of reading the same story as a child and hoping that love would beat all. I truly loved every second of this story.

A gem, filled with wisdom, fluid/easy read that you won't want to put down

I have liked Brian Tracy's books since I stumbled upon them some years ago, but I honestly believe this may be his best offerring of all.
I stumbled upon this at the local Barnes and Noble and was excited that he has written a new book.
This book contains the essential steps anyone can take to strive for excellence and succeed in life.
The book is exactly long enough at 116 pages -- but you'll want more because it is such great reading.
This is wisdom distilled down to its very essence. If you have no plan and you have no focus, pick up the book and read a page.
As soon as you do you'll find you can't put it down. All the while you'll be gaining great insight about the essential things that will help you be happier and more succesful.
I've been a software developer for over 20 years and so when I opened this book and read the page that said,
"You will only be really successful and happy when you become excellent at something" I knew exactly what he meant.
You don't have to be perfect, you just have to strive for excellence. You won't always succeed at the tasks you take up, but you will succeed at learning, growing and getting better at whatever you truly focus on.
This is a great little book. It is filled with great insight, but it is also filled with actual activity that you can take to grow your life.
Read it and you'll love it. This little book could be the new beginning you are looking for. Pick it up and enjoy.
Even if you've read a lot of other books similar to this one as I have, I know you'll find a lot to reset your focus on. Great book.

Sad to see Brian Tracy losing his voice and vitality ...

Repetitive, Rehashed old contents. Sad to see Brian Tracy losing his voice and vitality in his presentation, plus all his recent years' audiobooks are lacking of new things to say, and he keeps chucking out so called new books and audio programs with same old contents. Personally, I think he was at his best in the 90s, with most of his important work published in his golden period.

Disappointing

This review contains spoilers. I was really disappointed in this book. There were some great tips, although things you are taught in kindergarten. Be nice, say thank you, listen. The basic takeaways were, write down your goals and focus on them. If you do this, God will make sure everything works out for you. One example from the book is a gentleman writes down his goal of doubling his income. He is then laid off. Days later he lands a new job making double the income and "things like this will happen for you too," because, "God wraps gifts in problems." So, yeah, write down your goals and God will make all your dreams come true. Not at all helpful unless what you need is a "be-nice-and-smile-and-don't-worry-God's-got-your-back-everything-will-work-out-better-than-okay" pep talk.
