Amazing story and highly recommended for church libraries. --Church Libraries 2004-06-03
About the Author
Brother Yun travels widely from his current base in Germany. Paul Hattaway is the international director of Asia Harvest, an organization committed to serving the church throughout Asia. He is an expert on the Chinese church and author of the bestselling titles The Heavenly Man, which has sold more than 500,000 in English alone, and Back to Jerusalem.
From AudioFile
The world can do nothing to a Christian who has no fear of man, Brother Yun says as he tells the world about his trials as a leader in the Chinese house church movement. Brother Yun's testimony is read in a modest yet firm voice by Cristofer Jean. While soft-spoken, Jean conveys all the passion and pain in Yun's life as he hid from Chinese authorities or languished in prison, at times facing torture. Jeany Park reads his wife's accounts with similar grace, and Grover Gardner delivers the introduction with authority. Yun's determination to find God's message through his suffering brings a rare force to his message. J.A.S. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

Powerful Personal Testimony of the Persecuted Church in China and the Ministry of Brother Yun
By Ranger
Brother Yun's The Heavenly Man is a remarkable testimony of his life as a Christian evangelist in the People's Republic of China from the time of his personal commitment to Christ at the age of 16 (1974) through to his remarkable escape and reunion with his family in Germany in 2001. Along the way we witness the wonderful "religious freedom" of Communist China and tender mercies of atheistic Communism towards uncompromising believers in Jesus Christ. Truly the persecuted Church of China has been watered by the seeds of its martyrs (yet revival continues in China while foolish Western Christians rush headlong into secular socialism like lambs to the slaughter). Brother Yun's book is a remarkable series of adventures in the Holy Spirit. Sometimes mind-boggling, often suspenseful, and frequently heart-wrenching, The Heavenly Man is just the kind of book smug, self-reliant Western Christians need to read to consider their own ways. What I like about this book is that despite the truly remarkable miracle testimonies recorded here, Yun also includes a great amount of introspection and soul-searching over his own ministry failures, missteps and stubborn self-will. The Chinese Church is not perfect nor are its leaders. Brother Yun is not afraid to acknowledge the mistakes in his own life. Paul Hattaway, the co-author and an expert on the Chinese Church, has done a remarkable job meticulously verifying the sometimes unbelievable aspects of Brother Yun's story. And while many of the testimonies seem too fantastic to believe, I found his life to be no more fantastic than the lives of the Bible saints all Christians are supposed to accept at face value. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. And Jesus said we would do "greater works than these" (His own) so why are the miracles in this book so hard for some to accept? As a Pentecostal/Full-Gospel believer with much experience in overseas evangelism, I found the wonderful miracles of Brother Yun's life to be what you would expect from a body of believers who have had to rely entirely on God's provision in the face of relentless poverty and persecution (something Western Christians can barely imagine). And Yun's most radical miracle testimony, the 74-day fast that strengthened his Christian resolve in China's most notorious prison, which many argue is medically impossible, is actually no more radical than what I have read in various survival and prisoner of war books. Except that Yun fasted in the power of the Holy Spirit! A Chinese writer living in Germany and a Chinese House leader from another group outside Yun's own network have been among his most vocal critics -- despite the overwhelming testimonies of hundreds of others who have known Yun for decades. That kind of slanderous criticism only helps me realize that even among the "saintly martyrs" of the persecuted church there will always be those who say "I am of Paul" or "I am of Apollos." Fine. But don't let the rantings of a few self-appointed online critics keep you from reading this stirring, well-written book. Brother Yun's current venture in support of the Back to Jerusalem campaign is particularly exciting as my research suggests this idea arose simultaneously in the hearts of many Christians throughout the global church, a miracle that could only be attributed to the work of the Holy Spirit. This book is one of the best I have read all year and is highly recommended.

Timely Conviction
By David A. Brayshaw
This book was recommended to me by a Christian friend who was reminded of it after we started discussing the connection that suffering has with true spirituality. Not being, at all, familiar with such deep persecution for Christ's sake that Brother Yun experienced, my mind was telling me that what I was reading was fabrication, not an account of God's many promises that tell us that one man can put ten thousand to fight, that He is a very present help in time of trouble, and that no evil will come nigh thee.
In fact, this biography states just the opposite. I am obliged to admit that the gospel we live in the US is a far cry from the reality of what it means to serve the Lord with all our hearts. If they hated Him, they will hate us, we are told, but such evil torture has not touched any of our lives as it did Brother Yun and those who served with him in China and throughout that region.
It was a real eye opener that which caused great division among Chinese Christians: additional materials from the United Pentecostal and Word of Faith/prosperity groups. Their interpretation of Scripture discovered in those materials did nothing for the church but to set one brother against the other. Finding unity in all that mess was a true challenge, and one that the body of Christ here in America should undertake prayerfully. Keeping the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace is imperative if we are to maintain a witness to this world.
If we do not decide, in our country, to press into the kingdom of God with all our might, we might as well consider ourselves nothing more than a club. Our message should be to the furtherance of the gospel, a witness to the only true God and Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, and nothing less. But instead, we are establishing huge churches where there are countless personality idols who rob the members of funds so they can build gold plated faucets in their bathrooms.
Exactly as I have been saying for years, the church should refuse building large facilities and seek converts by borrowing attractants from the secular world. Instead, our meetings should be home based and our study of Scripture so deep that we are able to quote entire books of the Bible. The pressures to achieve; and for others, the need to keep their families fed, clothed, and educated, are what most of us live for, not the cultivation of a profoundly inspiring and edifying walk with the Living God that is willing to go into all the world to preach the gospel in the most evil areas. In comparison, what we seek here are comforts, not discomfort, and so, we make ourselves willing to sacrifice the quality of our walks with the Lord.
My heart is heavy with the conviction Brother Yun has brought to me. Where do I go from here? How do I live that life that is more than mere Christianity? Help me, Lord, to learn and apply, and truly give my whole body, as a living sacrifice, in service to You.

... man went through is mind boggling all for his love of Christ and the Gospel
By Eva
What this man went through is mind boggling all for his love of Christ and the Gospel. You get a different perspective and a deep understanding how we all suffer just because they refused to compromise who Jesus Christ is. The ending of the book is really good. I love how he compares how we are also spiritually attacked - differently but alike. It's really simply written and very easy reading
