Behind Iron Lace, by Mercy Celeste

Author’s Note: I published Behind Iron Lace almost four years ago with a publisher who was less than honest. I call this book ‘the cursed book’. In all these years, I’ve been asked if I will ever revisit Caleb and Darcy. Now that the rights for this story have once again reverted me, I am happy to say that I did revisit the story that started it all for me. I am taking back this book. I made it mine again.
In my part of the world we have a saying, a little something extra, a gift, a thank you for all that you’ve done…we have lagniappe, pronounced lan yap. After nearly four years, I am giving you a bit of lagniappe as a thank you for everything. Lagniappe in the form of a thirty thousand word addition to Behind Iron Lace. Thank you for buying the original, stay after the end for the new.
And now, for the rest of the story….

Mercy

Hot and steamy in the Big Easy isn’t the life Darcy Butler wants, until he meets a smooth-talking bad boy…

Darcy Butler is a fish out of water and is suffocating in the humid New Orleans heat. Dissatisfied with his career, his life, he is homesick and heartbroken. Above all Darcy is straight. Or so he believes until he meets the drop-dead gorgeous photographer he wants to revamp the art department of his e-magazine.

Caleb Mitchell, bad boy extraordinaire, lives life on the edge. He’s been around the world covering murder and mayhem. Back in New Orleans to tend his dying mother, Caleb is worn down by grief. He seeks the diversion of working at a local e-magazine to help keep him sane. He doesn’t expect the instant attraction to the bright-eyed editor/owner. That Darcy is probably straight doesn’t matter to Caleb. Because when Caleb wants something, nothing will stand in his way.

Will Darcy be his salvation or his undoing?

About the Author
Born and raised in the wilds of north west Florida, I currently make my home in Mobile, Alabama, where I attended the University of South Alabama. My interests are as diverse as the topics about which I write. I love to quilt, cook, and troll resale stores for bargains. Being a good southern girl, I love football and fried food. I write southern themed spicy romance of the het and gay variety. Because love doesn’t care who you are.

Wonderful debut book
By Tom W
Darcy is the editor of an online magazine, newly moved to New Orleans from Oregon. The heat is wilting him, his love life strangling him, and his best gal pal/part time lover is jerking him around. And not in a good way.

Caleb is a recognized artist and photographer, home in the Big Easy to see his mother through her last days. Caleb lives hard, loves hard and gets what he wants.

When he sees Darcy and decided he wants some of that, a little thing like Darcy being straight won't stop him. Will it?

This book is at hot and steamy as the city in which it is set. Right - like you didn't see THAT comparison coming. A native of the South myself, I know how these men can be, especially those Bayou boys. And Ms. Celeste gets them exactly right. The attitude, the accent, the sexiness - all down to a "T".

And Darcy - what a nicely drawn character. He is the perfect foil to Caleb's steam - all coolness and control and restraint. But you know what they say about still waters...

When these two come together, it's magic. They fit together very nicely and I was rooting for them from the beginning. At first I thought, Oh no a GFY (gay for you) story. But Ms. Celeste went below the surface here and delved into Darcy's unhappy relationship status and Caleb's hot love em and leave em ways. The backstories are as interesting and involved as any I have seen recently. I like that she took the time and care to make us see these two charming, interesting men through many different lenses. Where Darcy could be shrill, he is complex and deep. Where Caleb could be all glitz, he is murky and tangy and spicy and hurt.

What shows through in both of these men is the wounded hearts both have. Both are walking wounded, numb, and hurting. They don't even know they need each other as badly as they do.

I was impressed with the chances Ms. Celeste took towards the ending also. There was no neatly wrapped up with a bow ending - that would have been too easy and obvious. She took the time to be true to the characters, and gave them an ending that rang very true to each man.

Bravo!

Great work, and VERY highly recommended. I can't wait for her next work!

Loved it...loved it...loved it!
By Portia de Moncur
I really didn't think that there was a book good enough to distract me from National Novel Writing Month, better known by its acronym NaNoWriMo. In 30 days I, along with thousands of other crazy people, have committed to produce a 50,000 word novel. My plan for November was basically just publishing the reviews that were sent in my reviewers and doing just enough to keep MM Good Book Reviews running smoothly. Maybe read and review a book or two if I was on track with NaNoWriMo.

Then I made the mistake of starting Behind Iron Lace. I'm ashamed to admit that until I started it, I'd never even read the blurb. I just loved the cover art and knew from our online friendship that I loved Mercy Celeste twisted sense of humor.

From the very first paragraph I was hooked. Being a Yankee, who after 20 years, still dreads deep Southern summers, I could totally relate to poor Darcy's first summer in New Orleans. Couple that with the fact that New Orleans is my favorite city in the world and Behind Iron Lace was off to a stellar beginning. Mercy does a fabulous job of bring N'awlins unique ambiance to life.

From moment one, the chemistry between Darcy and Caleb is intense. At first, they appear to be polar opposites; Darcy the straight-laced, Northern intellectual, Caleb the bad-boy Southern artist. But somehow it works. Which was really surprising as neither man is really out of the closet. Hell, Darcy doesn't even realize that he is in one.

Truly, this is my favorite kind of MM romance. It moves along at a nice pace and you really get to know the characters and get to watch them fall in love. Watching each of the main characters drop their individual baggage, to get to the place where they could even entertain the possibility of a relationship, was a joy to read. *side note: Mercy, If you'd made poor Caleb wait any longer to get into Darcy's pants, you and I were going to have a long talk about suspense vs. torture.*

So yeah...I'll be up late tonight pecking away at my keyboard, because while I was supposed to be writing earlier, I was cuddling with my Kindle...and it was sooooo worth it.

This is boring. So not worth the money.
By Tipper
I gave up after one third was read. This is boring. Plain and simple. In addition it is utterly unbelievable. No one who considers a same sex relationship for the first time ever, and is totally freaked out about it, will suddenly have anal sex less than 24 hours later, without prep, without lube and without protection. The sex is also poorly described and it is as far from panty melting as it can possibly get. Stay away!
