Evans, born to a life of cleaning white folks’ houses, freedom is the size of a human heart, never bigger or smaller. It comes from within and can’t be given or taken away. And, as her waiting-on-heaven Baptist preacher and white-controlled schools have taught her, freedom takes a back seat to staying safe—whether she’s working as a maid to Joan's family in Jim Crow Mississippi or as a live-in domestic in Chicago, where the rules are far more subtle. To Zach Bernstein, Jewish University of Chicago law student, freedom is an ever-expanding circle, like a balloon that can be blown up bigger and bigger without bursting. It’s in the songs the summer volunteers sing to ward off the fear that they, too, will end up like James Chaney, Mickey Schwerner, and Andrew Goodman, missing since June 21 and presumed dead. It’s in Zach’s faith and commitment to tzedakah—justice and righteousness. It’s why he has come to Mississippi in the summer of 1964 to teach at the Meridian Freedom School. As their lives collide, they each question what freedom means and the price they’ll pay to have it.

About the Author
Susan Follett is a corporate technology manager who grew up in the epicenter of the civil rights movement—Mississippi in the '60s. Although too young to fully understand the history and the impact of particular events, such as the march from Selma to Montgomery or the murder of the three civil rights workers near her hometown in the summer of 1964, she has been haunted and intrigued by this era as an adult. She lives in St. Paul, Minnesota.

An endearing and eloquent look at the civil rights era from a perspective rarely given.

This novel is a find! I quickly felt myself purged into the civil rights movement and the struggle before these two young women from opposite sides of the Jim Crow era. I just simply could not put it down. Susan Follett did an eloquent job of telling the story from the perspective of three very different views. I have heard stories of the Jim Crow era and the "Agency" model of the midwest from my mother-in-law and this book just brought those stories full circle for me. A real page turner... I can see this one on the big screen one day. Very well written and respectful it isn't a surprise to see that it is suggested reading for school curriculum. Great work Ms. Follett

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, The Fog Machine! It is evident that the author, Susan Follett, did a lot of research to supplement her own personal experience, during the civil rights movement. The characters in the story show the many different perspective people had, and still do, regarding racial inequality/injustice, and the actions they choose to take to provide solutions. I would highly recommend this book for personal reading or as a book club read. It would provide a great springboard for lively discussions on the topic of racial inequality.

THE FOG MACHINE - A great read on growing up as a black person in Mississippi in the 1950s and 60s.

THE FOG MACHINE is a wonderful novel using actual 1960s historical events as a frame of reference. It provides a lesson on how prejudice in taught at an early age and how children and adults deal with its awful effects. The perspective of a black 16-year old girl, who is not quite an adult, serving well-to-do while families in Mississippi and Chicago is enlightening. Easy reading for adults and high school students, for whom it should be mandatory reading in history classes . Susan has done a great job her first novel.
