K-Gr 2–Adorable Ben and his dog are off to the vet in this installment in a charming series. It's time for Aggie to be spayed, and Ben must deal with a bit of separation anxiety and a brief change in his pet's behavior. Ries's style is clean and basic without being choppy and detached. It contains just a hint of wry humor that dovetails nicely with the characters' sometimes droll expressions. Dormer's illustrations are wonderful, evoking pathos when Ben cries in the backseat of the car on the way home after leaving Aggie, and laughter when Ben transforms her from a “lamp head” to a “lion head” by drawing a mane on her Elizabethan collar. Ries and Dormer once again prove a delightful pairing, cheerfully and tenderly persuading new readers to keep turning the page.Alyson Low, Fayetteville Public Library, AR

In this follow-up to Good Dog, Aggie (2009), set in an obedience school, it’s off to the vet for a young boy, Ben, and his beloved pooch, Aggie, who needs to be spayed, a procedure that’s explained as something that will keep her from “getting sick . . . or having any puppies.” In three chapters, Aggie’s loyal master relates his worries about leaving Aggie with the vet overnight, missing her while she is gone, and helping her through the healing process. The bright, pleasing art and sensitive text capture a range of authentic emotions. A strong choice for beginning readers. Grades 1-3. --Andrew Medlar

Great choice for beginning readers.
By FIRR-Kids!
In this installment of Ben and Aggie's adventures, the duo is making a trip to the vet's office. The time has come for Aggie to be spayed. I was a little surprised the author chose that particular operation to introduce to kids, but when I gave it a bit more thought, it really is sensible. Spaying an neutering is both an important and common procedure, and one that children should be familiar with. Ben's mom explains in her matter-of-fact way that in addition to preventing puppies, this will help keep Aggie from getting sick when she gets older.
Both Ben and Aggie try very hard to be brave. Ben asks the vet a lot of questions to quell his fears, gives Aggie a big hug and goes home without her for one night. It is a long drive home without his friend and Ben's bed feels terribly empty that night.
When they pick up Aggie the next day, Ben expects her to be excited to see him, running to greet him and jumping around. But when he arrives, Aggie is lying very still, with a paper cone around her head. The vet explains that Aggie needs some quiet time while her incision heals. The paper cone is to keep her from licking her stitches (it's a dog thing). Ben busts out his stash of art supplies and transforms the paper cone into a fierce lion's mane. Each day, Aggie feels a bit better, until she is back to her old self.
This really is the perfect book for beginning readers. The sentences are short and the nice, bright illustrations fill most of each page. Plus, kids get to see that it's okay to be scared, and learn a little bit about responsible pet ownership. This really is a win-win for parents and children alike.

Reis and Dormer got it just right on this one. It's always good to see a children's book that talks about an experience that many children go through but is seldom written about. Nearly everybody who gets a new dog takes it to the vet to get spayed, but what is this experience like from the child's point of view? Well, for Ben it is slightly traumatic to have his beloved pet, Aggie, spend the night away from him only to return the next day as a "lamp head." Reis and Dormer capture the anxiety of the event with gentleness and humor, showing Ben making the best of a bad situation by turning Aggie's protective collar into a lion's mane. A great idea for a book, it as well executed as the first one in the series, Aggie and Ben. Will serve pet-owning parents well.
