Spend a few dollars more and get a better guide

This is a good guide for the beginner. It moves you through learning Access in a logical way. However, if you think you are going to read this book and be able to design a database that works, think again.

Creating a working relational database is not as easy as one might think. If you don't set up your tables and table relationship the right way, queries and forms will not work properly or will not work at all. Although the author discusses building table relationships, it's more about how to mechanically do it in Access rather than the theory behind it. Access has 2 relationship types and the author decides to only teach you how to set up ONE of them. Also, even though the author discusses multivalued fields, he decides that they shouldn't be used and doesn't bother to teach the user how to set one up. He recommends a junction table but never teaches you how to set one one up.

Access has a simple way to create a backup of your database, but for some reason, the author totally ignores this. He also recommends that you do this ridiculously long and complicated way of backing up just one table before making changes when backing up the whole database is much quicker.

As for form design, the author doesn't go into much detail about subforms. Subforms are great...when the work. But, if you didn't set up your relationships correctly (or your tables), subforms will not link properly and won't work. If you try to create a subform using the Forms Wizard and it doesn't work because your relationships are hosed, then what? You have to use the drag and drop method, which the author doesn't even mention.

This is as far as a got in the book. I decided it was better to send this back to the library and start over again with a better Access guide.

I would not recommend this book unless you already have extensive data base ...

If you have database building experience, this book might be helpful. I do not have experience (hence - the "for dummies"). I am computer literate, and do use the other MS programs. That knowledge does not help with database building. I find the program itself very complicate with all it's layers and different views. The book added to the complexity and left me very frustrated trying to comprehend exactly what it was instructing me to do. I would not recommend this book unless you already have extensive data base experience.

A resource for budding theologists

The Bible Book by Book is a wonderful resource for teens and even adults who want to know more background information on the Word of God. This book by Cris Rogers will take you through each book of the Bible illustrated in full color with beautiful pictures about the lands, people and places of the Bible. There is a theme applied to each book so for the book of II Kings the theme would be "the collapse of an empire" or for Haggai the theme would be "it's time to build".

Each chapter has an outline that gives the author, date written, type of book, key characters and major themes. This is great if you want to read all the books written by Paul or Moses or if you want to read a book from a certain time period to learn the history. Then follows the Title and Style which is simply details about what the book is, so for Psalms it give details about the songs, and how they differ from today's songs and more. Next is GPS which is the details about what the book covers such as kindgoms, peoples and other information as to the whys and wheres of the book. Background and also some short details are given as well as other books to read are recommended.

With these beautiful pictures that illustrate the book like the picture of the reconstructed Ishtar Gate or people from the modern part of the world that the book discusses. I think they're really on to something here. I can only speak for myself, as someone who already has a background in programming, but I believe the book actually works. Over a couple weeks I read the book, did the little puzzles and exercises which the authors were so insistent that I do, and was really surprised at the depth of knowledge I came out with at the other end.- Layla Rose (DU CS)

You get it when you get it

I have had a love-hate relationship with this book for a while. I've tried to read this book and make sense of it many times over the years. The book being funny puts you at ease but I believe it makes you lazy at the same time, you will look for fun over learning as the books sets you up, and when the emphasis is shifted from learning, you don't learn. This was my perspective. Hey, everyone is different. But everyone you talk to and reviews you read about this book, have been praising this book. So, I said to myself, okay I will start a fresh but only this time I want to learn, fun is fun but let me put fun in the background and bring the learning part to the fore front... That's it I cracked the code, invented light blub, well not exactly, but now I see what everyone mean. This book is a gem. I have learnt and am learning so much from this book. It not only teaches how to code but also teaches inner workings of Java thus making it clear to understand how code to written one way or the other. And it is ALSO funny, witty and whimsical which I learned not to get carried away with. When you get it you get it, this book is a masterpiece.

Great learning tool

I bought this to give me a heads up on using Toad for work, having previously worked with MySQL. This is a great tool to get used to screens and where to find things, what Toad can do and what are some shortcuts. I even taught some shortcuts to some veterans at work. Worth the purchase, even if it only goes through Toad 8 something...and I'm using toad 12.8...still relevant.

Toad that was a Prince

As in most of the O'Reilly pocket paperbacks, this one is a wonderful resource. If you need a quick check of something you don't recall the details, this will probably assist you admirably. It requires you be knowleable of Toad. If you are looking for something to instruct you in the use of Toad, you may want a more substancial book. This one includes some tips and tricks that should prove beneficial to most experienced Toad users. As a quick reference the layout is good and the table of contents makes it easy to find what you need. There is not alot of meat on these bones, but the meat is pretty good. For more in depth explainations you may want to look at the Toad Handbook by Bert Scalzo and Dan Hotka.

The premise of this book is that demons are real and must be fought through repentance, prayer, and fasting. Bill Vincent details the different spirits that can affect your life and how to combat each one to rid your life of all negative forces. And not only you are affected. At times, you can break the curse for your entire family. I appreciated the prayers for this purpose.

More detail on fasting for the purpose of fighting demonic forces would have been helpful.

Kevin Charles did a good job of narrating this material. His tone and cadence were right on and he has a pleasing voice.
