What made you initiate the idea of providing a guide like Writing Treatments to Sell?

The most frequent question we were getting from clients—novelists as well as itinerant screenwriters was “what is a treatment?” We realized that book answering this question would be helpful.

Who was your target audience?

The book’s target audience is anyone who wants to write or sell a story to the motion picture or television world.

Who ended up putting pen to paper?

We have a process where we outline the content together, Chi-Li takes a shot at the first draft, then Kenneth does the next, etc.

Is the book specifically targeted for the film industry only?

Although we targeted the book to the film industry, in the years since it was first published we've learned that its useful to writers of all kinds—children’s books, novels, etc.—because it helps them to “get the story straight” before launching into the actual drafting.

Why a book based specifically on treatments?

Because a treatment is a unique creature that will never itself see publication or production, and therefore everyone wonders why it even exists.

What is a “treatment?”

To quote directly from the book: “A treatment is a relatively brief, loosely narrative written pitch of a story intended for production as a film for theatrical exhibition or television broadcast. Written in user-friendly, dramatic, but straightforward and highly visual prose, in the present tense, the treatment highlights in broad strokes your story’s hook, primary characters, acts and action line, setting, point of view, and most dramatic scenes and turning points.” The book goes into detail about the meaning of each phrase in this definition, distinguishing the treatment from “coverage,” “synopsis,” “outlines,” among others.

The Story Merchant itself is all about content, branding and consultation in the entertainment and media arena. How does this book tie into the bigger plan of Story Merchant?

This book, like Atchity’s How to Publish Your Novel or Write Time: A Guide to the Creative Process, from Vision through Revision is a tool by which the Story Merchant shares experience in the commercial world of stories with aspiring storytellers.

Does reading the book create a sense of more business for Story Merchant or is it more directed towards internal growth for each and every writer / screen writer?

We can’t spend time with every storyteller out there who needs guidance, so we wrote this book to help anyone who’s motivated enough to buy it—now available in ebook for the first time. But that’s not to say Story Merchant has found coaching clients through this and Atchity’s other books.

Being an aspiring author myself, I find that optimism and endurance are two of the main things to hold onto while craving for acknowledgement towards your own work, what is your advice towards fellow aspirers who look up to yourselves for hope?

We’ve learned that hope is great, but determination is even better, when it comes to success. Just keep working on your career, whether you’re in a good mood or not, whether you’re hopeful or not. Work is the only sure road to success.

Simply that they’re all books from Kenneth Atchity.

In general how has publishing and moving into the entertainment industry changed for writers. I mean – I myself sometimes wish that I had started writing ten years earlier as it seems as if the market might have been less chaotic. In today’s time it’s as if everyone can put pen to paper and call themselves an author. How do you define the word author, writer?

A writer is someone who WRITES, and who cares enough about her writing to find an audience for it. While everything else has changed, that definition has not changed and will not change.

Last but not least, what else can people look forward to? Being in the industry you are it is important to recreate your image and stay in the zone with current trends, how do you intend on moving forward while carrying the weight of years and years’ experience in the existing field? How do you mould yourself to be eye catching and present in the future?

More books are in the works, focused on marketing your writing and on selling your writing, as well as a just-completed book of quotes for writers. We move forward by changing because we respond to a changing world.

Great tool, already put it to use!

I just finished this book about four days ago, and I've already completed my first treatment, in my case a television series "bible." This book gave me a lot of insights, and I'm quite satisfied. It's short, easy to read, direct and practical. There's even a section at the end about copyrighting and legal issues, which is very helpful and will come in handy for the next part of the process that awaits me.

By the way, a previous reviewer mentioned that this book deserves four stars instead of five because a sample treatment for big-screen movies wasn't included. In actuality, a sample television movie treatment was included. All you have to do is change the seven-act structure used for television movies into the three-act structure used for big-screen movies and that TV movie sample treatment can also be used as a sample treatment for a big-screen movie.

Good facts but missing the main part

For a person looking to write a movie treatment for the big screen, the first 20 or so pages outline the requirements very well. But just when you've finished the section on what makes a good movie treatment and are ready to see how all of the requirements tie together, THERE IS NO SAMPLE MOVIE TREATMENT TO REVIEW! NOT ONE! Absolutely bizarre. And yes, treatments vary in how they are written, but how about just one to look at and review? The book moves on to television and gives some sample treatments but they're for a 7 act TV movie which is much different than a 3 act big screen movie. Why is it that a book on how to create treatments omits the very thing that many people buy the book to look at and dissect?

Almost hit the mark

I know absolutely nothing about writing a movie treatment. Be aware, I am interested in writing a movie treatment NOT a full fledged script. So when I asked learned friends what book they suggested everyone named this one. I even asked for other references, everyone said this was THE book.
The book does give great details on the content of a treatment, the necessary parts, and insight into the industry, however I was waaaay disappointed that a sample movie treatment was NOT provided. Had the sample been included this book would have gotten a 5 star rating.
It would have been quite helpful to see a treatment dissected and the typing format!! Perhaps someone can email me a suggestion on a book that has the elements this book is missing

Loved the story!

This book is great! Meghan Diane tells an excellent story with both humor and hard hitting emotions that I believe both young adults and older ones can relate to - especially those that identify as LGBTQ. This book is fun, cute, sad, and entertaining all at the same time. It really gives a sense of what the characters are going through; making it feel like you're experiencing their high school journey right along with them. I was very impressed with her portrayal of different romantic, friendly, and familial relationships, and that she really captured the wide range of teenage emotions.
Admittedly, it took the first couple chapters to get used to her writing style, but after that, I couldn't put the book down! This book was definitely worth the read, and I can't wait to see what Meghan Diane comes up with next!

Wonderful !

This was such a light-hearted and carefree easy read. The way the author approached the situations that arose in this book, and often arise in real life, was handled with such good care. There was enough conflict to keep things afloat but not outlandish that it makes it seem as if every questioning teen goes through horror when facing the difficulty of being their true self with their loved ones. I really enjoyed the innocent way Meghan handled Skye and Andy's relationship. I absolutely recommend this book not only to young gay teens but to anyone who doesn't mind a good young adult fiction every now and then.
So much potential that I cannot wait to see what this author comes up with next.

Purchased for the Environmental Engineering PE Exam

This book was suggested to me by several people in my Environmental Engineering PE Prep course. I begrudgingly purchased it and it was very, very helpful on several PE exam questions. The sections on Baghouses, Cyclones, and ESPs have more depth than the Lindeburg Environmental PE book. I recommend it if you are taking the Environmental Engineering PE.

fantastic book, as an environmental engineer i use this book constantly. no matter what the need is for my air pollution problems, this book has the solutions! easy to read, great diagrams, and pictures. Gives me all the information i need to design any control device. I highly praise cooper for this book. Seriously fantastic reference material. i used it a lot as a student and now i use it as a professional. great book. Just great practice problems and examples. even has cost estimates!

Good manual for basic air pollution control principles

Good basic manual for industrial air pollution control. However, this classic book is starting to fall behind as technology in air pollution control advances. Cooper Alley sticks with only the most very fundamental aspects of pollution control. Overall a good manual for the student or engineer, but if you are looking for an introduction to a broad range of controls, a web search might provide better results.

Gottfried Unden studied Biology and Chemistry at the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich where he received his Dr. rer. nat. Since 1993 he is Professor for Microbiology at the Department of Microbiology and Wine Research at the University of Mainz. The main areas of work is bacterial metabolism and its adaptation to changing environmental conditions like switching from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism, or the use of carboxylic acid as the substrate for growth, and the function of bacterial sensors.

Eckhard Thines studied Biology at the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he received his PhD in Biotechnology. As a postdoctoral fellow he spent two years in Professor Nicholas Talbot's laboratory in Exeter, UK. He joined the Institute of Biotechnology and Drug Research (IBWF) in Kaiserslautern, Germany in 2006. Since 2009 he is CSO of the IBWF and since 2012 he is Professor for Biotechnology and Drug Research at the University of Mainz. His research focusses on fungicide research, mode of action research, target identification and validation as well as fungal secondary metabolism. Furthermore he is interested in host/pathogen-interactions in fungal plant diseases, e.g. Esca and grape black rot.

Anja Sch?ffler studied Biology at the University of Kaiserslautern. Her PhD focused on the characterisation of fungal natural products with antimicrobial activity. In 2010 she joined Professor William Fenical?s group at the Scripps Institute for Oceanography in San Diego, where she studied antibacterial natural products from streptomycetes. In 2011 she started a research fellowship at the Institute of Biotechnology and Drug Research (IBWF, Kaiserslautern). Her scientific work focuses on fungal bioactive natural products and assay development, the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, as well as isolation and taxonomy of fungi.

Paul M. Selzer studied biology, parasitology, and biochemistry at the University of T?bingen, Germany, where he also received his PhD in biochemistry. He spent three years at the Molecular Design Institute and the Parasitology and Tropical Disease Research Laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco. During his career he has worked as a researcher and scientific manager for several pharmaceutical companies, and is currently Head of Antiparasitics R&D at Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, Germany. I like money ... Lonergan explains why

Capitalism has swept the modern world because it is a unique religion with no dogma, according to Lonergan and his understanding of the German philosopher Walter Benjamin.

But capitalism requires rules based on institutional trust, which has been the strong point of the US until recently. It is why most countries rely on the US dollar as the benchmark currency for international trade. The "strength" of the dollar is based on the trust people have of its future value. An example he cites is Argentina, where people do not trust the future of their country; however, Argentines do trust the US government, which is why they use US dollars for all major transactions.

Lonergan explains money in terms of human emotion, fears, trust and innovation. Basically, money reflects our trust in each other. It's a simple straightforward concept, but it's why paper -- instead of gold, barrels of oil or buckets of beans -- is the basis of local and international trade.

As for the origins of money, he explains, "What? They just print it?"

True enough. A central banker needs only to " ... press the 1 on their computer keyboard, and then the 0 a few times."

He then explains why this is not a conservative nightmare, nor a liberal dream of the perfect society. The key is trust; he explains, "The banking system is stabilized instantaneously when there is trust, and the ability to create money at will creates this trust."

The problem is fear. There is a fine line between fear and danger, and the authority to print money is an extraordinary power.

Print too much money, and inflation rises above 5 percent and people lose trust in government. As long as politicians don't print too much money, trust remains strong. But, he warns, "For most of human history, sufficient trust did not exist for a system of paper money to persist."

The challenge is correlating trust with reality. Since panic is a correlating behaviour, if we all fear a recession and save, the result will be a recession. Optimism is a public good; fear is the opposite.

Clear, logical and straightforward. It's also frightening to think of how seldom people use those qualities of thought, decision and action.

Highly original and thought provoking

Like it or not, money and finance dominate much of our lives. We work for it, we borrow it, we lend it, we envy it. And yet despite the importance of money, Lonergan's fascinating and highly original book illustrates how we actually understand very little about money and our relationship with it.

What is money and where does it come from? What uses does finance really serve? How does it affect us? Why is it that finance can be so destabilising? How could central bankers have dealt more effectively with the recent financial crisis?

The author tackles each of these issues and more in a profoundly thoughtful way, all in little more than 130 pages of vivid and entertaining prose. This is by no means a conventional economist's treatment of the subject. In fact, the book highlights many inadequacies of traditional economics. The author draws on a wide array of disciplines - economics, philosophy, psychology, anthropology and others - to examine our relationship with money. What becomes clear is that our views towards money and finance are often little more than behavioural biases - some of which can be very harmful.

The book is divided into 4 sections, each of which focuses on the author's view of the most important properties of money: interdependence, control of the future, measurement and allure. It is a lively yet challenging read and requires no knowledge of economics...although it will certainly make economists think again about what they really know about money!

Deeper into money

This is a four-star book with six-star originality.

Mr. Lonergan provides an updated definition of money. For those of us familiar with the old "unit of accounting, store of value, measure of wealth" type framework, this book provides a new way of attaching meaning to the concept of money. As the author states, it's baffling he's the first to cover the interconnection-theory in this fashion. For the most ubiquitous and arguably most important element of our social fabric it's odd the literature is so thin.

Kudos to Mr. Lonergan for getting his thoughts in print.

fantastic little read

New Years Dream is another fantastic addition to the paranormal world Tyler May as created. This time we get to view things through the eyes of Zander and Billy. We also get to hang out a little more with some of the characters from Angel of Darkness.

New Years Eve is approaching and the Vampires consider this a very special night. A Birthday for them, so to speak. It is also considered by other’s to be a night that can bring out different types of powers in humans and paranormals alike. You just have to be willing to use it. The downside is, it’s only for a short amount of time.

Be ready for a sweet read where we can revisit the heartwarming and passionate relationship between Christian and Zander. I also fell a little more in love with Billy. He may seem so hard on the outside but he has a really big heart and he is starting to prove it. Wonderful little read that will have you psyched up for the next installment.

So if you haven't started reading this series you are definitely lacking and you must get with the program. This novella is just a glimpse of whats to come inthe continuation of this saga.

This book give you a complete and utter new respect for Billy. While both heartbreaking and truly from a plave of selfless love that Billy doesn't even comprehend he has his gift. Even though gives great pain can finally give him closure. Thw saying one door closes and another opens is a perfect phrase for where this book is starting to lead us.

True to tyler marys style she has lwft us salivating for what is still to come and it seems it wont be all Champaign and caviear but this book solidified the true circle of family the group has become and the bonds that tie them together strengthen greatly. Can't. Wait for the next book.
