5.0 out of 5 stars The Amazing Octopus, April 14, 2013 By MEA
This review is from: The Amazing Octopus! Early Reader Books for Under 8's. Amazing facts and photos of some of the world's most intelligent animals. (Amazing Animals Early Reader Books) (Kindle Edition)
This is a good book to introduce nature to your child. There are interesting facts about the octopus and the pictures capture the child's mind. The words are easy for an eight year old to read without adult assistance yet this book can entertain both and share a special time together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun way to get your child to learn about animals! By K. Smith "Taaa!" (St. Louis, MO)
This review is from: Sharks! Shark Facts, Pictures and Links to Over 50 VIDEOS. Early Reader Shark Books for Kids (Amazing Animals Early Reader Book) (Kindle Edition)
I can't say enough about these books. All of the books by this author are amazing. They all give a general background of the animal and interesting facts about them. The best part is that they have usually 3 videos that you can click on and watch right there! These are great education tools and I think they are great for children (I read and watch them too!). If you're looking for a fun way for your child to learn about animals, these books are the way to go. You can sign up to receive emails from the author about promotional days that the books are free on amazon. But I think these books are definitely worth the price.

There is even a "True or False" section at the end of the book to bolster learning and boost the fun
Why not try some yourself? True or False?

1. Venus is the third planet from the Sun.
2. Venus is a rocky planet NOT a gas planet.
3. Venus is sometimes referred to as Earth’s twin planet.
4. Venus has no seasons - it is just hot all the time.
5. Venus is so bright that sometimes you can even see it during the day.
6. It takes Venus an average of 2,225 Earth days to travel around the Sun.
7. Venus is sometimes called the morning star.
8. Venus is sometimes called the evening star.
9. Venus is sometimes called the lunchtime star.
10. Venus is covered by thick clouds of acid.

A HOT place!
By Richard and Liz
Well written, informational book on Venus, the second planet from the sun. Highly recommended for kids wanting to know more about space! Got a school project to write? Then this book is a wonderful resource. Great pictures (photos and diagrams) and information. This book is written for the earlier reader - not so much detail as in some of the other IP Factly books but not as simply written as the animal books in this series.

Some snippets from the book:
Venus is just 400 miles smaller in diameter than the earth * No seasons, hot all the time * Spins clockwise * Covered in thick clouds of acid * No moons * No life on Venus *

At the end of the book there are 20 True or False statements to test your child on what he/she has read. (Answers are included on the following page.)

You will also find a link to their website for 9 YouTube videos on Venus. We use these books and videos as resources in our homeschool. It saves so much time not having to search through YouTube yourself but parents please be vigilant around your children as sometimes the Google "click" ads that appear on the bottom of the screen are not appropriate for kids. When we are watching I quickly click the X to get rid of them!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED from our house to yours! Happy learning! Thanks IP for another great book :)

Amazing facts about Venus!
By PatriciaT.
Great fact book about Venus! Lots of beautiful pictures in this book that give you a clear idea of how this planet looks. I had no idea how hot Venus is, even though it has been called Earth's twin! If your kids love space, this will be the perfect book for them! It even includes a quiz at the end as an added bonus.

Tesla Pricipals and thoughts.
By Danny L Stark
Tesla is one of those unsung heros who changed the world. Many famous people copied his genious and called it their own. However, even today, we as a scientific community are just now understanding the real extent of his genious. Oh by the way, did you realize for the electricity all around you (alternating current) can be atributed to Tesla?
This book is about his thoughts and ideas about radio wave propagation around the turn of the century (1900).
Today , if he is correct..(and science is just now proving him right on many things), then many fundamental principals of wave propagation have been in error.

Interesting
By J. Stephen Peek
The True Wireless is interesting but it left me wondering how everything would have worked had Tesla had the opportunity to complete the project. What was not said in this book is the most interesting: Tesla's financier, J.P. Morgan pulled out of a 'free energy' project because he owned substantial interest in Thomas Edison's emerging hydro-electric power company.

An interesting dip into the lake known as Grindr
By Daniel Paul D'Aniello
This was an insightful look into Grindr and the tremendous impact the app is having on gay culture. I read this book because I was brainstorming a book topic of my own and found it to be rewarding and insightful.

Ok read
By Mikey Goodmark
Mostly tech talk and stories. While interesting I don't think it explores enough th damage that grindr has done to the gay community and out ability to socialize outside of the app.

Crosstalk, by Connie Willis

Science fiction icon Connie Willis brilliantly mixes a speculative plot, the wit of Nora Ephron, and the comedic flair of P. G. Wodehouse in Crosstalk—a genre-bending novel that pushes social media, smartphone technology, and twenty-four-hour availability to hilarious and chilling extremes as one young woman abruptly finds herself with way more connectivity than she ever desired.

In the not-too-distant future, a simple outpatient procedure to increase empathy between romantic partners has become all the rage. And Briddey Flannigan is delighted when her boyfriend, Trent, suggests undergoing the operation prior to a marriage proposal—to enjoy better emotional connection and a perfect relationship with complete communication and understanding. But things don’t quite work out as planned, and Briddey finds herself connected to someone else entirely—in a way far beyond what she signed up for.

It is almost more than she can handle—especially when the stress of managing her all-too-eager-to-communicate-at-all-times family is already burdening her brain. But that’s only the beginning. As things go from bad to worse, she begins to see the dark side of too much information, and to realize that love—and communication—are far more complicated than she ever imagined.

Chapter One

“Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments.”

—William Shakespeare, “Sonnet 116”

By the time Briddey pulled into the parking garage at Commspan, there were forty-two text messages on her phone. The first one was from Suki Parker—of course—and the next four were from Jill Quincy, all saying some variant of “Dying to hear what happened.” Suki’s said, “Heard rumor Trent Worth took you to Iridium!???”

Of course you did, Briddey thought. Suki was Commspan’s very own Gossip Girl. And that meant by now the whole company knew it. It was a good thing Commspan didn’t have a no-fraternization policy—she and Trent could never have kept their romance secret. But she’d hoped to keep them from finding out about last night at least until she could tell her family. If they don’t know already.

She scanned through her other texts. There were five from her sister Kathleen, eight from her sister Mary Clare, and nine from Aunt Oona reminding her of the Daughters of Ireland Gaelic poetry reading Saturday night.

I should never have given her a smartphone, Briddey thought. It had never occurred to her that her great-aunt would figure out how to use it—she couldn’t even set her DVR. Or her clocks. But Briddey had reckoned without Aunt Oona’s desire to pester her constantly about the Daughters of Ireland. She’d gotten Maeve to teach her, and she now sent Briddey texts about it twenty times a day.

Briddey quickly read through the rest of their messages, but none of them began, “OMG! You can’t be seriously thinking of doing this!”

Good. That meant she still had time to decide what she was going to say to them—though not much, given the speed of communication these days.

She scrolled quickly through the rest of her messages to see if there was one from Trent. There was. It said simply, “Love you. Call me ASAP.” She very much wanted to, but the longer she was out here in the garage, the more likely Jill—or worse, Suki—was to drive in and begin interrogating her, and she’d come to work early precisely to avoid that. Talking to Trent would just have to wait till she got safely to her office.

She got out of her car and walked quickly toward the main door, checking the other cars to see who else was here. She didn’t see Trent’s Porsche. She didn’t see Suki’s car either, or her assistant, Charla’s, which was good, but Jill’s Prius was there, parked next to C.B. Schwartz’s ancient Honda.

His car was always here—Briddey suspected he lived in his lab, sleeping on the sagging couch that looked like he’d retrieved it from a curb somewhere. But Jill usually arrived late, and Briddey wouldn’t put it past her to come early expressly to pump Briddey. She was probably lying in wait for her in the lobby. I’ll have to go in the side entrance, Briddey thought, changing course, and hope nobody sees me on the way there.

Nobody did, and there was no one in the elevator or up on four. Good, Briddey thought, hurrying down the hall. With Charla not in yet, she could go straight into her office, barricade the door, and come up with some way to break this to her family before they began bombarding her with calls saying, “Why didn’t you answer any of my texts? What’s wrong?”

Especially Aunt Oona, who always immediately leaped to the conclusion that something terrible had happened to her and began calling around to all the hospitals. And this time she’ll be convinced she was justified in her premonition, Briddey thought as she turned down the hall to her office.

“Briddey!” Jill Quincy called from the end of the hall.

So close, Briddey thought, trying to decide whether she could make it to her office before Jill reached her, but Jill was already running toward her, calling, “There you are! I’ve been texting you all morning! I didn’t see you come in.”

She skidded to a stop next to Briddey. “I was down in the lobby,” she said breathlessly, “but I must have missed you. I heard you and Trent Worth went to dinner at Iridium last night. So what happened?”

I can’t tell you, Briddey thought. Not till I’ve told my family. But she couldn’t refuse to talk either, or that would be all over the building within seconds. “Come here,” she said, and pulled Jill into the copy room so passersby wouldn’t hear them.

“Well?” Jill said the moment Briddey’d shut the door. “He proposed, didn’t he? Oh, my God, I knew it! You are so lucky! Do you know how many women would kill to be engaged to Trent Worth? And you managed to snag him! After only six weeks!”

“I didn’t ‘snag’ him,” Briddey said, “and he didn’t propose.” But Jill wasn’t listening.

“Let me see your ring!” she cried. “I’ll bet it’s gorgeous!” She grabbed for Briddey’s hand and then, as its ringlessness registered, asked, “Where is it?”

“We’re not engaged,” Briddey said.

“What do you mean, you’re not engaged? Then why did he take you to a place like Iridium? On a Thursday? Oh, my God! He asked you to get an EED, didn’t he? That’s even better than getting engaged!” She hugged Briddey. “I am so happy for you! I can’t wait to tell everybody!” She started for the door.

“No, don’t!” Briddey said, grabbing her arm. “Please!”

“Why not?” Jill asked, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. “Don’t tell me you turned him down!”

“No, of course not,” Briddey said. “It’s just—”

“Just what? He’s the most eligible guy at Commspan! And he must love you or he wouldn’t have asked you to get an EED! And you obviously love him or you wouldn’t have said yes. So what’s the problem?”

She gave Briddey a searching look. “I know what it is. You’re disappointed he didn’t ask you to have it and propose, aren’t you?”

And now that would be all over Commspan, too. “No, not at all,” Briddey said. “He said he wants to wait to get engaged till after we have the EED, so I’ll be able to sense how much he loves me when he asks me.”

“Oh, my God, that’s the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard! I can’t believe it! He’s gorgeous, he’s willing to commit, and he’s romantic! Do you know how rare that is? All the guys I date are either commitment-phobes or liars—or both. You are so lucky! It’s that hair of yours. Guys go wild for red hair. Maybe I should dye mine red.” She frowned. “You still haven’t told me why you don’t want me to tell anyone.”

“It’s my family. I’m not sure how to break this to them.”

“You don’t think they’ll be happy? But he’s so perfect! He’s got a great job and a great car, and the losers your sister Kathleen dates . . . Or is it the EED? Everyone says it’s totally safe.”

“It is,” Briddey said. “But they’re kind of—”

“Overprotective?”

No, meddlesome and interfering. “Yes, so don’t say anything till I’ve told them, okay?”

“Only if you tell me all the gory details! I want to know when you’re having it done and—”

Briddey’s phone rang. It was Trent’s ring tone, but that didn’t mean it was him. The last time she’d been with the family, Maeve had done something to her phone so that half the time it said it was him when it wasn’t, and Briddey hadn’t been able to fix it.

But at least it was a way out of the conversation. “Sorry,” Briddey said to Jill. “I just need to see who this is.” She glanced at the screen. “Look, I need to take this.” She opened the copy room door and started out into the hall. “Promise me—”

“My lips are sealed,” Jill said. “But you have to promise to tell me everything.”

“I will.” Briddey turned away so Jill couldn’t see her declining the call, then put the phone up to her ear, said, “Hello?” and walked briskly down the hall till she was out of sight.

She stuck the phone back in her pocket. And was instantly sorry when she saw Phillip from Logistics bearing down on her. “I heard via the grapevine that you and Trent Worth are going to get an EED,” he said.

How is that possible? Briddey thought. I only left Jill ten seconds ago.

“Wow! Just like Tom Brady!” Phillip was saying. “Congratulations! That’s great! But I hope you’re not going to do it till after your boy Trent comes up with a better idea for the new phone than just more memory and an unbreakable screen. The rumor is Apple’s coming out with something that’ll blow every other smartphone out of the water, and Trent can’t afford to be laid up in the hospital—”

“The EED’s not major surgery,” Briddey began, but Phillip wasn’t listening either.

“If we don’t watch out, Commspan could be the next Nokia,” he said, and launched into a history of smartphone-company failures. “A small company like us can’t compete unless we come up with something revolutionary, a whole new concept, and we need to come up with it fast, or—”

Come on, Aunt Oona, Briddey thought. You usually call me every five minutes. Where are you when I need you?

Briddey’s phone rang. Thank you, she breathed. “I have to take this in my office,” she said. “I’ll see you at the meeting at eleven,” and walked off.

But it wasn’t Aunt Oona who’d saved her. It was Mary Clare, and the instant after Briddey sent the call to her voicemail, she got a text from Maeve. “I’m fine,” it read. “Pay no attention to my mother.”

Which meant they still didn’t know, thank goodness, though she felt sorry for Maeve. What was it this time? Videogames? Bulimia? Cyberbullying? Mary Clare was constantly in hysterics over her, even though Maeve was a perfectly normal nine-year-old girl.

In fact, she’s the only normal member of my family, Briddey thought.

Mary Clare certainly wasn’t normal. She obsessed constantly about Maeve’s homework, her grades, whether she’d get into an Ivy League college, her friends, her eating habits (Mary Clare was convinced she was anorexic), and the fact that she didn’t read enough, even though (or possibly because) Mary Clare was constantly forcing Little Women and Alice in Wonderland on her.

Last week Mary Clare had been convinced Maeve was sending too many texts, and the week before that that she was eating too much sugared cereal (which didn’t exactly square with the anorexia). Today it was probably nude selfies. Or the hantavirus.

For Maeve’s sake, Briddey should really call Mary Clare and try to calm her down, but not till she’d worked out what she was going to say about the EED. And she didn’t have much time. Half of Commspan probably knew by now, and one of them would be bound to mention it to Aunt Oona the next time she “popped in” with Maeve to show her how Maeve looked in her new step-dancing costume and try to convince her to go to some boring Daughters of Ireland thing . . .

Oh, my God, and there was Suki, Grapevine Girl herself, emerging from the Human Resources office. Briddey cast decorum to the winds and sprinted for the safety of her office. She yanked the door open and flung herself inside—and practically into her assistant’s arms.

“I thought you’d never get here,” Charla said, steadying her. “You’ve got a million messages, and I want to hear all about last night! You are so lucky to be getting an EED!”

Faster than a speeding bullet, Briddey thought. If Commspan wants a revolutionary form of communication, they should design a phone based on our grapevine.

“I didn’t see your car in the garage,” Briddey said.

“Nate gave me a ride to work. I wish I could talk him into having an EED done. It would be great to know whether he loves me or not. You are so lucky you won’t have to worry about that anymore. I mean, I spend all my time trying to figure out when he tells me he does, is that for real or does he just want to hook up? I mean, last night, he—”

“You said I had messages. Who are they from?”

“Your sister Mary Clare mostly, and your aunt and your other sister. I put them all on your computer. I thought you told them not to phone you at work.”

“I did,” Briddey said. But they didn’t listen. As usual.

“Did you talk to them?” she asked aloud, dreading Charla’s answer, but Charla shook her head.

Thank goodness for that. “If they call again,” Briddey said, “do not, repeat, do not say anything to them about the EED. I haven’t had the chance to tell them yet, and I want to be the one to break the news.”

“They’ll be so excited!”

Wanna bet? “Who are the other messages from?” she asked.

“Trent Worth called and said to call him as soon as you got in, and so did Trish Mendez and Rahul Deshnev’s assistant. And Art Sampson needs you to look over his memo on improving interdepartmental communication right away and tell him if you have any suggestions to add. It’s on your computer. So when he asked you, were you thrilled?”

“Yes,” Briddey said. “If anyone else comes in or calls, tell them I can’t talk to them till after the meeting.” She went into her office, shut the door, and called Trent. He didn’t answer.

She texted and messaged him telling him to call her, tried Rahul Deshnev’s assistant with the same result, then called Trish Mendez. “Is it true that you and Trent Worth are going to have an EED?” Trish said.

“Yes,” Briddey said, thinking, I don’t think interdepartmental communication needs any improving.

“That’s wonderful!” Trish said. “When are you having it done?”

“I don’t know. Trent wants to have Dr. Verrick do it, and—”

“Dr. Verrick? Oh, my God! He did Brad and Angelina’s, didn’t he?”

“Yes, so he has a really long waiting list, and I don’t know when we’ll even be able to get in to see him, let alone schedule the EED.”

“He did Caitlyn Jenner’s, too, didn’t he?” Trish said. “And Kim Kardashian’s, though that one didn’t work because she fell in love with somebody else, I can’t remember his name. He was in the last Avengers movie.”

This was going to take all day. Briddey held her phone close to the desk and rapped twice on the desktop with her fist. “Come in,” she called, and put the phone up to her ear. “Listen, my appointment’s here. Can I call you back?”

She hung up and, with a feeling of “out of the frying pan, into the fire,” checked the twenty-two messages from her family—correction, thirty-one—to make sure they still didn’t know, starting with Mary Clare’s in case she’d decided Maeve was possessed by demons and had scheduled an exorcism or something.

Unique and refreshing
By renee
This book surprised me...I was hesitant of buying it...It was not at all my usual type of book but I was desperate for something new....It immediately grabbed me from its first page and I didn't put it down until I finished it... It was a refreshing read from the typical genre's that are out there.... same stories over and over....Not this book! I'm glad I gave this author a chance...I am a new fan!

The very light side of Connie Willis
By Angie Boyter
Briddey is elated! Her boyfriend Trent has asked her to get an EED, couples surgery that enables recipients to intensify and better feel their partners’ emotions. They have to keep their plans secret from their colleagues at high-tech communications company Commspan and Briddey’s very intrusive Irish-American family to avoid gossip and interference (Good luck with that!). The surgery does take place, though, and Briddey soon begins to “hear” not just emotions but actual thoughts. The problem is that the sender isn’t Trent….
Since the plot centers on telepathy and emotional enhancement via surgery, Crosstalk will probably be shelved as science fiction, but I think it is better described as romantic comedy and can easily envision it as a big-screen summer hit, featuring your favorite romantic comedy acting duo. I noticed Amazon classifies it as Romance.
I enjoy Willis’ short stories and novellas in Analog/Asimov magazines and look forward to her annual Christmas stories. It seemed to me that Crosstalk had enough meat for a novella or short novel, but it had bloated into over 500 pages, and there were many times when I was thinking, “Okay, okay. Get on with it.” In addition, while it is clear that we are supposed to figure out what was going on before Briddey does, it was obvious so early that it rather spoiled the fun.
The length of the book may also have contributed to some of the aspects I found less successful. Willis is known for her quirky rather Dickensian characters. In Crosstalk Briddey is a delight, as is her precocious nine-year-old niece Maeve, who is always one step ahead of her helicopter mother’s attempts to monitor and control her life. CB, the weirdo who works in the basement of Commspan, is the hero of the book whom we all root for. One-dimensional characters like Maeve’s interfering mother, though, become downright annoying with repetition, and in 500 pages there can be a lot of repetition.
Willis has fun playing with our obsessive texting and phoning, but that joke gets stale, too.
Despite the length, Crosstalk is not exactly meticulous in its details. Unless I missed it (and I was on the lookout) the term EED is never expanded. There are some obvious questions about how the telepathy works that are never addressed. We are told that CB never went to college; then how did he get a job doing research at Commspan? Another obvious question involves the pop culture music, shows, and books telepaths use to screen out voices. This book obviously takes place in the very near future. The main characters are in their late 20s. So why are they citing songs like Teen Angel and shows like Gilligan’s Island, which went off the air in 1967? Unless there is a reason, which should be given, people like Briddey and CB would naturally use much newer references.
Readers who especially admire the light side of Connie Willis will enjoy this book; those who favor her more thoughtful writing are likely to be disappointed. If you’ve never read Willis, DO treat yourself to The Doomsday Book. To sample her more playful side, try To Say Nothing of the Dog.

Cute, funny, and clever, but a little lightweight
By J. Gitzlaff
Disclaimer: I'm writing this review based on an advance reader copy: with only a couple of months before publication I assume that probably it's in its final state except for spelling and syntax, though honestly I think this is a "very good" book which probably could become "great" with just a little more time and refinement in editing. I came to read Crosstalk in part because I love CW's earlier book To Say Nothing of the Dog. It was the first CW book I read, and from early word of mouth I get the sense that a lot of people are going to be drawing comparisons between the two (or expecting other to). IHMO, though, that's doing a disservice to both books.

In Crosstalk the narrative begins with our protagonist, Briddey, planning to get an EED (a small speculative medical implant intended to detect and transmit emotional states to a matching EED implanted in her boyfriend). As plot devices go, it's a very clever idea, and the books starts strong. From there, we quickly come to know Briddey through her inner monologue, various supporting characters are introduced, and unintended consequences occur. I'm not going to lie - I thought it was a pretty engaging page turner, and I set aside time to read more than I do for most books.

One of the things I enjoy about CW's writing is that she clearly takes the time and effort to lay breadcrumbs throughout her text, hints that help a careful reader see where things are going or - after you've finished the book - you can think back on and say "ah, it was there all along." TSNOTD was a masterwork in that respect. Crosstalk certainly bears a family resemblance to TSNOTD, but it's a much less intricate book and the general direction the story will take is not hard to suss out. There were a couple of turnings to the plot that I didn't see coming (one at around the 150 page mark, and another at around 400 pages in), but I'm afraid that many of the other twists and reveals - including a couple of the bigger ones - were telegraphed a little too clearly, and I was anticipating them a bit too far in advance. So all in all, I'd give it a rating somewhere in the very-good-but-not excellent range, probably 3 stars for some people and 4 stars for others, but I like CW's stuff so I'll round it up to 4.

And now, for the obligatory nitpicking: (1) People don't really conduct their own interior monologue in complete sentences, though I can sympathize if CW didn't want to write a couple of hundred pages of (literal) stream of consciousness. (2) Maeve is simply too mature and precocious for a 9-year old. Thirteen, fourteen, maybe. (3) Contrary to the ad copy, Briddey didn't really seem like a "high powered exec." And based on her interior monologue, which after all is the whole focus of this book, she seldom seemed to do any work or even think about her job. (4) Good god CB mansplains to her like crazy through the whole book. I guess there's a narrative reason why he does that, but still.... (5) I think that in general, Briddey probably would've been a little more interesting if she had more agency. Less "being rescued" and "being taught" and more doing things on her own...a role which for some reason was a role which devolved onto the 9-year old girl. I don't get that.

Palestinians in Syria: Nakba Memories of Shattered Communities, by Anaheed Al-Hardan

One hundred thousand Palestinians fled to Syria after being expelled from Palestine upon the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. Integrating into Syrian society over time, their experience stands in stark contrast to the plight of Palestinian refugees in other Arab countries, leading to different ways through which to understand the 1948 Nakba, or catastrophe, in their popular memory.

Conducting interviews with first-, second-, and third-generation members of Syria's Palestinian community, Anaheed Al-Hardan follows the evolution of the Nakba―the central signifier of the Palestinian refugee past and present―in Arab intellectual discourses, Syria's Palestinian politics, and the community's memorialization. Al-Hardan's sophisticated research sheds light on the enduring relevance of the Nakba among the communities it helped create, while challenging the nationalist and patriotic idea that memories of the Nakba are static and universally shared among Palestinians. Her study also critically tracks the Nakba's changing meaning in light of Syria's twenty-first-century civil war.

Review

Palestinians in Syria is an original exploration of the evolution of memories of the traumatic events of the Nakba which affected the entire Arab population of Palestine in 1948. It skillfully traces how understanding of the valence and meaning of these events has changed over time. This book also constitutes the first major study of the Palestinian community in Syria, and it takes on added importance in light of the violent displacement of most of this community during the bitter fighting in and around Yarmouk camp near Damascus.

(Rashid Khalidi, author of Palestinian Identity: The Construction of Modern National Consciousness)

This extremely important and timely book provides a vivid portrait of the Palestinian refugee community in Syria―a community now dispersed by the war in that country. In its detailed analysis of Palestinian memories and histories of the devastating events of 1948, this study succeeds in demonstrating how the socially and economically integrated Palestinians in Syria were somehow different from other Palestinian refugees in the region. Although this book is about the Catastrophe of 1948, it is also about the Palestinian catastrophe in Syria today.

(Dawn Chatty, author of Displacement and Dispossession in the Modern Middle East)

What drives Palestinians in Syria is not the events of the Nakba but rather Nakba memories transferred through three generations, from those who experienced it up to the young of today. Anaheed Al-Hardan places her own identity as a third-generation refugee at the center of her thinking about uprooting and of her interactions with participants in her study, and she reflects critically on how this affected her research. She also carried out her research in a Palestinian exile region hardly touched by other researchers and has managed to incorporate effects of the ongoing civil war that has re-displaced thousands of Palestinian refugees in a new uprooting.

(Rosemary Sayigh, author of Palestinians: From Peasants to Revolutionaries)

An important and timely addition to the growing body of Nakba scholarship.

(Middle East Eye)

Provides a fascinating insight into a community now almost completely obliterated.

Broken Souls- Book 2 in the Unfortunate Souls Series

I finally cracked Guy Stone’s tough-guy exterior, revealing a kind and tortured soul akin to my own. But just as I found myself falling for the stone-cold Captain was when our journey came to a close, ripping us apart as fast as we’d first met. I was taken to the City of Unfortunate Souls and, amongst an assortment of underworld creatures, I was to be integrated with others like me; vampires. But my hope for finally fitting in came to a screeching halt when suspicions arose of my intentions and I was taken prisoner in the old ghost town, my only wish being that Guy Stone was somewhere out there in the human world safe from harm, and that I might live another day so I could see him again.

If someone had told me only a few short weeks ago I’d fall for the likes of a vampire -me being the brutal hunter of Unfortunates as I was- I’d have laughed in their face. But despite my previous disposition, it had happened, and I was falling in love with teenage-vampire Ruby Carter. My bond to her was what made it so hard to let her go, but I knew there was no other choice, that she needed to be with her own kind. Yet, just when I thought I could go back to life as usual, I was captured and taken to Tombstone, AZ, The City of Unfortunate Souls, to await my sentencing and, more than likely, my execution. I could only pray that Ruby was safe and could go on happy without me, living the life of greatness she was destined to fulfil.

*This book is recommended for ages 14 and up due to a little bit of kissing, cursing, and mild violence.

Great second installment
By Bobby K Reeves
Book two in the Unfortunate Souls series picks up where book one left off- with a cliffhanger. Guy Stone, the hunter of Unfortunate Souls, has fallen in love with the newborn teenage vampire that he saved, Ruby Carter. Not only has he fallen for her, he bonded to her when she saved his life. Despite his love for her, he did what he thought was best for her and took her to Tombstone to integrate with her own kind. Unfortunately, suspicions arose upon her arrival and Ruby was imprisoned. Her hope was that Guy got away safely. Her hope was for nothing, though, because Guy was attacked as he was leaving and was also imprisoned in Tombstone, as well, unbeknownst to Ruby. He is facing sure execution, now. How will the unlikely pair make it out of this situation alive?
I enjoyed this book as much as, if not more than, the first book in this series (Unfortunate Souls). The world building and character development got even better in this second installment, in my opinion. This story is different than the normal “vampire story”, and I really appreciate this take on the genre fiction. I think that fans of this genre will really enjoy this series.

Teen urban paranormal dystopian romance
By Convoke
Broken Souls (Book 2) City of Unfortunate Unfortunate Souls series, by Jade M. Phillips isn't the sort of book I normally read, but I was at a friend's and she and she had it on her Kindle. I started reading it there and couldn't stop. Before I knew it, I'd read the entire book.

This story flies by at the speed of light. It is a vampire book for those fourteen and up, cautions the author, because of mild kissing and cursing, so author Jade M. Phillips reminds us.

I really should have read Book ! first, I have a suspicion, although I never for a moment lost my place. Be that as it may, here's a taste that won't spoil your fun:

"If someone had told me only a few short weeks ago I’d fall for the likes of a vampire - me being the brutal hunter of Unfortunates as I was - I’d have laughed in their face.
"...,just when I thought I could go back to life as usual, I was captured and taken to Tombstone, AZ, The City of Unfortunate Souls."

This book is a quick read, a look into a different sort of story than you might expect, but is definitely a paranormal dystopian urban romance with some teen/young adult cautions, written by someone with a flair for these tropes and mixed genres.

If I were a teen or young adult, I'd grab this immediately and run off to read it, and then get the others in this series.

Somewhere out there in the human world safe from harm, and that I might live another day so I could see him again.

The Journey: From Ismaeleya to Higienópolis - The story of an Egyptian Jew, by Alain Bigio

Whenever I am asked: "Where are you from?" I feel insecure and hesitate to answer. Strange as it may sound, for me the answer is neither simple nor direct. I was born in Cairo Egypt, in 1944, yet I don’t have an Egyptian nationality and can hardly speak the national language, Arabic. I have a French nationality, without ever having lived in France. Although my surname sounds Italian, I don’t speak the Italian. My mother tongue is French, but I prefer to read in English. I have lived in Brazil since I was eight, but I speak Portuguese with an accent as incorrigible as it is undefined: it gives no clue to my origins as it is typical of no place. In Brazil, I studied at the English school, graduated as an Engineer at the University of Sao Paulo, chose the Brazilian nationality and obtained a Brazilian passport. Here I settled and created new roots. So this book of memoirs is a complex answer to that simple question.

World history in the context of one family's 350-year journey
By d rubo
“The story of an Egyptian Jew” is much more than the story of one person. It integrates world history since 70 CE, politics, economics, and culture with his family’s history over the last 350 years. The story gives insight to the word, diaspora, as it traces the movements of Sephardic Jews throughout the Iberian Peninsula, Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Alain Bigio himself is a product of the dynamics of these forces: born in Cairo, Egypt; nationality and mother tongue is French; Italian surname; and lives in Brazil.

The Journey has given me context for so many world events: St Augustine’s edict; the rise of Islam in the 7th century; Spain’s King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in 1492; Italy’s Medici family in the 1600’s; Aleppo, Syria, the destination of caravans bringing goods from the Far East in the 1700’s and 1800’s, the Suez Canal in 1869; the Ottoman Empire’s emperor’s refusal to pay government debts in 1875; England’s support for Egypt growing cotton after the supply of cotton from the US was disrupted by its Civil War; the Muslim Brotherhood, Rommel, Gamal Abdel Nasser, and Anwar El Sadat in the 1940’s; the Suez crisis in 1956; the Six-Day War in 1967; and Brazil’s dictatorship.

Discrimination against Jews and how Alain’s ancestors made their way despite it pervades the book. Alain provides an intimate view of his own life and the sense of “Être comme il faut” (literally, “to be as one should”). Alain’s tone remains positive as he recounts sweet memories of a good life.

After reading the book, I felt I had taken a journey … disturbing as well as uplifting. Highly recommended.

The author spent a lot of time researching this book. This book gives you a great history of the Sephardic Jews throughout the times.. I also enjoyed learning about Alain's family background. He is truly a mixture of cultures. This book is a good read and I recommended to people interested in Sephardic history and culture and especially Egyptian jews. Thank you Alain for writing your story and sharing it with the world.

I liked very much the name of the book
By Avraham Bar-Av (Bentata)
I liked very much the name of the book:"The Journey".
I liked it because it relates to the fate of the Jewish people from the day they became a people. The novel tells the intimate story of the author's family which is altogether the story of a people that has "been on a journey" for more than three thousand years. It seems that the same set of events keeps repeating itself varying just slightly from one another. It starts with Coming to a new country, feeling safe, accepted and secure then, just when seems that it became a real homeland, A place to live in it happily ever after, they start to feel unwanted, harassment begins until it is again time to embark on a new journey.
